Unlicensed Salons Under Fire After HIV Infections in Erbil

Authorities in Erbil are tightening controls after three foreign workers at women’s salons tested positive for HIV. These confirmed cases have intensified public concern and prompted swift legal and health responses.

According to the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Health, health teams identified the HIV infections during routine checks. The individuals, all foreign nationals, were working in unlicensed salons in Erbil. Officials have withheld both their nationalities and the names of the salons.

The ministry confirmed that immediate measures were taken after detecting the infections. They stressed the importance of visiting only certified establishments with proper permits and health checks.

HIV, while mainly spread through sexual contact and contaminated blood, can also be transmitted via improperly cleaned tools. This includes items like razors or needles used in beauty procedures. Officials warned that poor hygiene in unlicensed salons in Erbil can pose serious health risks.

Following these findings, several salons were shut down. A government source revealed that six or seven locations were operating without proper licensing or health clearance. The same source noted that many employees had entered the region illegally and did not meet health or residency requirements.

Local authorities have launched a full investigation into unlicensed salons in Erbil. In response, new salon licenses are temporarily suspended. The health ministry has asked the public to report suspicious or unauthorized beauty services.

Officials said the infected individuals were arrested and some were deported. Surveillance on such businesses had been ongoing for months due to rising complaints from citizens. Many of these complaints specifically mentioned foreign-operated salons suspected of violating regulations.

As public anxiety grows, health officials continue to assure citizens that further inspections are underway. They reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding public health by ensuring only legal and safe services operate within the region.

The crackdown serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with unregulated beauty services. It also highlights the importance of proper sanitation and licensing in protecting community health.
