Iraq’s Grand Basra Water Project Nears Completion at 86.5%

Iraq has accelerated work on a major water pipeline serving central Basra. The project has now reached 86.5 percent completion. Engineering teams have installed 26.5 kilometers of the planned 37-kilometer transmission line.

The General Directorate of Water oversees the project under the federal construction ministry. Officials said crews now work through day and night shifts. Therefore, the faster schedule should help teams complete the remaining sections sooner.

Current operations focus on the crossing near the Al-Askari bridge. Engineers must connect pipeline sections without damaging nearby roads. Consequently, workers use trenchless methods beneath busy urban areas.

Technical teams have completed much of the difficult underground crossing work. Meanwhile, other crews continue preparing the route for new pipeline sections. Heavy machinery supports these operations across several active construction points.

The Basra water project forms the first phase of a larger infrastructure plan. It will create a main transmission route for the city. Moreover, the line will connect directly with the Hartha purification plant.

The pipeline will carry water from the plant’s third and fourth phases. Officials designed the system to strengthen distribution across Basra’s city center. As a result, residents should receive more stable water supplies after completion.

Project engineers use tunnel boring machines for microtunneling operations. These machines allow crews to work below roads and other structures. Therefore, construction can continue while limiting traffic disruption above ground.

Workers also install reinforced concrete jacking pipes along difficult underground sections. These pipes can manage strong pressure and long-term operating demands. In addition, their durable design can reduce future maintenance needs.

The government considers the development a key part of its ministerial program. Authorities want to modernize public services across southern Iraq. Water infrastructure remains especially important because Basra faces long-standing supply and quality problems.

The project aims to serve the entire center of Basra. Once operational, the system should improve pressure across the municipal network. Furthermore, the new line could support future population growth and urban expansion.

Officials expect the pipeline to provide a stronger link between purification and distribution facilities. This connection should reduce weak points within the existing network. Meanwhile, better flow management could improve service during periods of high demand.

The Basra water project also carries wider economic importance. Reliable water supports households, hospitals, schools, businesses, and industrial activity. Therefore, stronger water services can improve daily life and encourage local investment.

Construction teams still face complex engineering tasks along the remaining route. However, the high completion rate shows strong progress. Officials will now focus on final crossings, connections, inspections, and technical testing.

Engineers must test pressure levels before the system starts full operations. They must also inspect every connection and underground section. Consequently, careful testing will protect the network from leaks and failures.

The project represents one of Iraq’s largest water infrastructure efforts in the south. It combines modern tunneling methods with heavy-duty transmission equipment. Moreover, it aims to deliver lasting improvements for Basra residents.

Successful completion could reduce pressure on older parts of the network. It could also help authorities manage future extensions more effectively. Therefore, the pipeline may become a foundation for additional water projects.
