Iraq-Iran Security Pact Takes Center Stage

Iraq-Iran security pact talks resumed as senior officials from both countries met on the sidelines of an international gathering in Moscow. Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji held a strategic discussion with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, during the 13th International Security Officials Meeting.

The two sides reviewed the progress of the Iraq-Iran security pact signed in 2023. This agreement aims to boost cross-border cooperation and reinforce mutual security interests. Both officials emphasized the importance of the pact as a foundation for managing threats and promoting regional stability.

A major focus of the meeting was the disarmament of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The PKK, which operates from northern Iraq, remains a critical security issue. Turkiye, the United States, and the European Union classify it as a terrorist organization. Its presence has triggered tension along the Iraq-Turkiye border.

Both delegations discussed how dissolving the PKK could affect border security. They acknowledged the broader impact such a move would have on regional alliances and political dynamics. The Iraqi and Iranian sides reaffirmed their shared responsibility in preventing further destabilization.

The officials also addressed the situation in Syria. They agreed that preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial unity remains essential. This consensus reflected a common vision for peace and stability across neighboring regions.

During the meeting, both advisors underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue. They agreed to continue working together to implement the terms of the Iraq-Iran security pact. The goal is to strengthen coordination and prevent any escalation near shared borders.

As the conversation concluded, both sides expressed confidence in the pact’s framework. They also pledged to increase security collaboration through joint mechanisms. These efforts aim to reduce threats and maintain regional order.

The Iraq-Iran security pact now stands as a key tool for managing cross-border issues. Through consistent dialogue and mutual engagement, both governments seek to build a more stable and secure future.
