Iraq Records 18% Crime Drop as Drug Seizures Near Two Tons

Iraq’s crime rate fell 18 percent during the first half of 2026, according to new Interior Ministry figures. The Iraq crime rate decline highlights intensified security campaigns against drugs, tribal violence, smuggling, and organized criminal activity.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Major General Miqdad Miri presented the latest figures during a briefing in Baghdad on Tuesday. He said crime levels dropped 18 percent compared with corresponding periods in previous years.

Meanwhile, authorities strengthened their nationwide crackdown on narcotics trafficking and consumption. Security forces seized 1,977 kilograms of illegal drugs between January and June.

Additionally, officers arrested 3,553 suspects on drug-related charges during the same six-month period. Courts issued death sentences against 58 convicted individuals, while 236 others received life imprisonment terms.

Iraq has expanded its anti-drug operations significantly in recent years. Previously, traffickers often used the country mainly as a transit route for narcotics.

However, domestic drug consumption has increasingly created another major challenge for Iraqi authorities. Therefore, security agencies have increased raids, arrests, intelligence operations, and regional coordination.

Miri said Iraq conducted 17 cross-border anti-drug operations since the beginning of 2026. Authorities carried out these missions alongside neighboring and regional countries to target trafficking networks.

The Iraq crime rate decline also comes amid continued government action against armed tribal disputes. During the reporting period, security forces arrested 289 suspects linked to tribal armed attacks.

Tribal conflicts remain a serious security concern, particularly across several southern Iraqi provinces. Disputes can quickly escalate because many groups have access to light and medium weapons.

In some cases, armed clashes have also involved heavier weapons, including mortar shells. Consequently, Iraqi military units sometimes intervene to contain violence and restore local security.

Land, water resources, and territorial disagreements often fuel these disputes. Furthermore, the widespread availability of weapons continues to complicate government efforts to control tribal violence.

Security operations also targeted several other forms of criminal activity during the first half of 2026. Authorities arrested 102 suspects over extremist affiliations or promoting ideas linked to the dissolved Baath Party.

Moreover, security forces detained 50 suspects on antiquities smuggling charges. Officers also arrested 83 suspects in connection with electronic blackmail cases.

Separately, authorities apprehended 25 suspects for financial fraud and 52 suspects for human trafficking. These figures show the broad scope of Interior Ministry security operations nationwide.

Traffic enforcement also increased sharply during the same period. According to Miri, authorities issued 2,638,000 traffic fines across Iraq during the first six months.

Overall, the Iraq crime rate decline marks a notable development in the country’s domestic security landscape. However, drugs, armed disputes, trafficking, and digital crimes continue to demand sustained government attention.

The latest figures suggest authorities are expanding enforcement across multiple security fronts. Meanwhile, regional cooperation remains central to Iraq’s campaign against cross-border narcotics networks and organized crime.
