In a lively Baghdad neighborhood, workers are restoring a centuries-old shrine to revive Iraq’s Jewish heritage. This shrine, the final resting place of Rabbi Isaac Gaon, had long suffered from neglect and decay.
Until recently, the site was filled with trash. Its windows were shattered, the door rusted, and walls blackened by years of abandonment. Now, thanks to a dedicated restoration effort, marble tiles cover the floor, and a newly inscribed tombstone honors the rabbi. A silver menorah glimmers on the back wall, symbolizing renewed respect for the site.
Khalida Elyahu, head of Iraq’s Jewish community, recalled the challenges they faced. “It was a garbage dump, and we weren’t allowed to restore it,” she said. But that changed with support from Iraqi authorities and her community’s determination.
Though once among the largest in the Middle East, Iraq’s Jewish population has dwindled to only a few dozen. Baghdad now has only one synagogue, and it stands without a rabbi. Many former Jewish homes are deserted and collapsing.
Despite the decline, this restoration project is funded entirely by the Jewish community. With a $150,000 budget, the team hopes to breathe life into both history and hope. Elyahu sees the shrine’s revival as a step toward reviving Iraq’s Jewish heritage—a source of pride for Jews within Iraq and in exile.
Little is known about Rabbi Isaac Gaon. His name appears in only one tale from the 10th century, where he is said to have led 90,000 Jews to meet Imam Ali during early Islamic conquests. Though historians remain skeptical of the account, its cultural value persists. According to scholars, such stories emerged to show allegiance to Muslim rulers, which sometimes protected minority rights.
Jewish history in Iraq dates back over 2,600 years. After Babylon’s conquest of Jerusalem, Jewish captives were brought to Mesopotamia. Over time, they built a rich religious life, including the creation of the Babylonian Talmud.
In the early 20th century, Jews made up nearly 40 percent of Baghdad’s population. But violence and persecution, especially after the 1941 pogrom and Israel’s creation, forced most to flee. Today, fewer than 50 synagogues and Jewish sites remain, many in ruins.
The shrine once included a synagogue and a school. Now, it is a modest room centered around the grave. Two months of cleanup were needed to make it presentable. Yet, the efforts are drawing attention. Visitors from outside Iraq are now requesting tours.
Elder residents remember the shrine’s spiritual role. Mussa Hayawi, who grew up nearby, recalled people praying for healing, fertility, and freedom. Women once bathed in the well’s waters, hoping for children.
Though times have changed, the commitment to reviving Iraq’s Jewish heritage remains strong. With each stone laid and wall repaired, the community reclaims not only a sacred space but a vital piece of Iraq’s diverse cultural identity.
