Ancient Sites Fuel Iraq Tourism Growth

Baghdad, Iraq- Iraq is witnessing a notable surge in tourism, particularly among European and American visitors, with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities reporting an influx of over 500 tourists in 2024. The country’s rich archaeological heritage and the ongoing improvements in infrastructure are making Iraq an increasingly attractive destination for foreign travelers.

According to Nasser Ghanim Murad, the head of the Tourism Authority, the number of tourists visiting Iraq’s iconic archaeological sites such as Babylon, Ur, the National Museum, Al-Mustansiriya School, and Akar Kouf reached 556 in the past year, predominantly from European countries and the United States.

Murad emphasized the growing international interest in Iraq’s ancient landmarks, particularly the city of Babylon. He expressed optimism that this upward trend would continue into 2025, as tourists are drawn to the country’s historical richness and newfound stability.

In light of Baghdad being designated the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2025, the Tourism Authority has intensified efforts to promote Iraq as a premier tourist destination. This includes a more robust marketing strategy, with the Authority taking part in international travel fairs such as those held in Madrid. There, Iraqi tourism companies formed partnerships with foreign counterparts to draw even more visitors to the country. The Authority is also planning to participate in additional tourism exhibitions in Berlin, London, and Dubai.

To further support the growth of tourism, the government is focusing on improving visa procedures, making it easier for tourists to visit Iraq. Alongside these efforts, ongoing development of tourism infrastructure and urban projects are enhancing the overall experience for visitors.

Murad highlighted the role of political and economic stability in Iraq’s tourism resurgence, stating that the country’s improving urban landscape, along with the government’s commitment to enhancing the tourism sector, has made Iraq one of the most promising destinations in the region.

With these initiatives in place and a clear path toward continued growth, Iraq is positioning itself to become a key player in global tourism, attracting visitors eager to explore its ancient wonders while enjoying the stability and modernization taking shape across the country.
