Iraq Prepares to Open Nasiriyah International Airport in Major Development Push

Iraq is preparing to open Nasiriyah International Airport within the next few months, marking a major step toward improving transportation, tourism, and economic development. Officials believe the project will strengthen connections across southern Iraq while supporting several long-term national initiatives.

Authorities in Dhi Qar Province say the airport will play an important role in attracting visitors and encouraging investment. Moreover, officials expect the project to improve access to some of Iraq’s most significant cultural and historical destinations.

Dhi Qar Governor Haitham al-Hamdani stated that preparations continue ahead of the planned inauguration. According to local authorities, the airport will create new opportunities for tourism and business activity throughout the province.

Furthermore, the airport will reduce travel times for passengers entering and leaving the region. As a result, travelers will gain easier access to important archaeological sites and religious destinations.

Officials also believe the airport will support Iraq’s Development Road project. The ambitious initiative aims to improve trade routes and transportation links across the country. Consequently, leaders expect stronger economic integration between Iraq and regional markets.

Additionally, tourism officials project that local attractions could draw more than one million visitors annually. Improved air connectivity could help accommodate that growth and encourage further investment in tourism infrastructure.

The Iraqi government selected the Chinese State Construction Engineering Corporation as the project’s primary contractor. Since construction began, work crews have focused on modernizing key airport facilities and expanding operational capacity.

The development plan includes extensive upgrades to airport infrastructure. Workers have renovated a runway measuring 3,400 meters in length. They have also improved a large airport apron covering approximately 185,000 square meters.

Meanwhile, construction teams continue developing passenger facilities and service buildings. The project includes a modern passenger terminal, a VIP facility, and a dedicated freight terminal. Additionally, planners have incorporated a four-star hotel into the overall design.

Authorities have also invested in administrative buildings and navigation systems. These improvements aim to increase efficiency while enhancing safety standards across the airport.

Last year, Iraq’s Transport Ministry reached an agreement with the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group. The partnership focuses on developing strategic plans for airport rehabilitation and future expansion projects throughout the country.

Initially, Nasiriyah International Airport will handle around 750,000 passengers each year. However, officials have already outlined a long-term expansion strategy. Under the ten-year plan, the airport’s capacity could rise significantly.

Once expansion phases are complete, the facility could accommodate up to 2.5 million passengers annually. Therefore, the airport could become one of southern Iraq’s most important transportation hubs.

As construction advances toward completion, expectations continue to grow. Many officials view Nasiriyah International Airport as a key project that could boost tourism, strengthen trade, and support broader economic growth across Iraq.
