Baghdad to build mega green district with one million trees

Baghdad mega green district is set to reshape the capital with a vision for sustainability and modern living. Iraq has revealed plans to transform the former Al Rasheed military camp into a vibrant new urban hub.

This landmark project includes the planting of more than one million trees, turning a historic military site into a green destination.

The Baghdad Sustainable Forests masterplan, designed by global architecture firm Gensler, will cover 10 million square metres.

Located in the southern Al Rasheed district, west of the Tigris River, the site will feature expansive green spaces, modern towers, and retail areas. Developers expect the highlight to be a 260-metre landmark tower that symbolizes Baghdad’s future ambitions.

Moreover, Baghdad mega green district aims to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the city’s resilience. With one million trees planned, the district could capture up to 22,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

This scale of ecological restoration places the project among the largest green initiatives in Iraq’s modern history.

In addition, developer Emkanat, once focused on villas and commercial properties, has shifted toward regeneration projects. The company now partners with international experts and Iraqi authorities to deliver sustainable urban growth.

This approach combines environmental responsibility with infrastructure development, ensuring that Baghdad gains both green benefits and modern facilities.

Furthermore, the district will include retail space, cultural attractions, and housing. These features aim to attract investors, residents, and visitors while promoting a healthier urban lifestyle.

The integration of dense tree cover with high-rise development highlights a balanced model of growth.

According to Gensler, the project demonstrates how architecture and ecology can work together. It represents an ambitious effort to align Baghdad with global sustainability trends.

The plan not only enhances urban life but also strengthens Iraq’s image as a forward-looking nation.

Ultimately, Baghdad mega green district symbolizes a new era for the capital. By blending ecological restoration with modern design, Iraq takes a bold step toward sustainable progress.

This project, once completed, will mark Baghdad as a regional leader in green urban development.
