Basra Cultural Expansion Accelerates as Iraq’s Biggest Library Opens in Shatt al-Arab With 27,000 Books

Basra cultural expansion gained momentum after a massive new Ayman Library branch opened in the Shatt al-Arab district. The new location offers more than 27,000 books across 10,000 different titles for readers of all ages.

The project stands in the Akwat area and covers nearly 3,000 square meters. The building also rises 11 meters high, making it one of Iraq’s tallest library structures.

Ayman Hafez described the branch as the country’s largest library by both size and collection. He explained that the project aims to strengthen educational and cultural development across Basra.

The new branch includes several sections designed for different activities and interests. Visitors can access reading areas, workspaces, gaming sections, and large book halls inside the building.

Hafez stressed the importance of creating modern cultural landmarks across Iraqi cities. He said the library represents a source of pride for Basra and its residents.

He also explained that the city deserves advanced educational and cultural institutions. Furthermore, he confirmed plans to expand the project into every Iraqi governorate in the coming years.

The Shatt al-Arab branch became the third Ayman Library location inside Basra. Earlier branches opened on Wufoud Street and Baho Street.

Basra cultural expansion continues attracting attention through projects focused on education, literature, and youth development. Local residents praised the library for offering a modern environment for students and families.

Many visitors attended the opening ceremony during the first days of operation. Families, students, and book lovers explored the different sections throughout the day.

Visitor Israa Aqeel praised the design and atmosphere inside the new branch. She described the library as modern, distinctive, and suitable for every age group.

She also highlighted the educational spaces designed especially for children and young readers. According to Aqeel, the branch creates a welcoming environment for learning and creativity.

Another visitor, Mustafa Assad, said social media encouraged him to visit the location. He described the library as a major cultural landmark for Basra.

Additionally, Assad praised the large collection of books and the building’s organized design. He explained that the project reflects positive cultural growth across the city.

Basra cultural expansion has accelerated recently through projects supporting art, education, and public spaces. Cultural observers believe the new library could encourage stronger reading habits among younger generations.

The opening also highlights growing investment in educational infrastructure across southern Iraq. Officials and residents continue calling for similar projects in other Iraqi provinces.
