Turkey-Iraq Water Agreement Marks a New Chapter in Regional Cooperation

The Turkey-Iraq water agreement represents a new phase of collaboration between the two neighboring countries. During his official visit to Baghdad, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the importance of this landmark accord. He noted that it is the first of its kind, highlighting its role in strengthening cooperation on shared water resources.

At a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Fidan said both sides discussed expanding ties in water management and trade. He explained that the upcoming Turkey-Iraq water agreement symbolizes a commitment to long-term coordination on regional challenges. The minister also reiterated that Turkey stands firmly beside Iraq in achieving security, stability, development, and reconstruction goals.

Fidan announced that several agreements would be finalized during the visit. He confirmed that these agreements would focus on improving Iraq’s water infrastructure and expanding energy collaboration. He stressed that building modern water systems will directly support Iraq’s recovery and economic progress. According to Fidan, both governments aim to create sustainable solutions for the fair and efficient use of water.

In his remarks, the Turkish foreign minister also addressed the broader regional context. He stated that Turkey and Iraq are cooperating closely in the fight against terrorism. He added that Ankara works directly with Iraqi authorities to ensure border security and prevent the movement of terrorist groups. Fidan said such coordination is essential for peace and stability across the Middle East.

Moreover, he highlighted Turkey’s new initiative, the “Terror-Free Turkey” project, which he said would contribute to regional security and development. Fidan underlined that cooperation among neighboring states must reach its highest and most comprehensive levels. This, he argued, is vital for promoting mutual trust and collective growth in the region.

Concluding his visit, Fidan expressed gratitude to Iraq’s leadership, particularly Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. He praised the prime minister’s role in advancing the country’s development agenda and deepening bilateral ties with Turkey. He reaffirmed that the Turkey-Iraq water agreement will serve as a foundation for future partnerships in various fields.

With this new understanding, both nations signal their readiness to move beyond past challenges. The agreement aims to transform shared resources into shared opportunities, ensuring that cooperation replaces conflict and that progress benefits both sides equally.
