Iraq Strengthens Tourism Sector with New Agreements and Regional Cooperation

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani recently met with Bandar bin Fahd Al-Fuhaid, President of the Arab Tourism Organization (ATO), to discuss strategies aimed at boosting Iraq’s tourism sector. The meeting marked a significant step in fostering regional cooperation and enhancing the country’s tourism infrastructure.

As a result of the discussions, two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities, as well as the International Development Bank for Investment and Finance. These agreements are designed to lay the groundwork for various initiatives that will benefit Iraq’s tourism industry.

The MoUs focus on several key areas of collaboration, including:

  1. Investment in Tourism Projects: The agreement will leverage a partnership between the Arab Tourism Organization and the Islamic Development Bank Group to attract capital for tourism development in Iraq. This will help support a range of tourism projects, from infrastructure improvements to new attractions.
  2. International Expertise and Consultation: By tapping into the organization’s network and agreements with global companies, Iraq will receive technical consultations and studies to guide the development of its tourism sector.
  3. Upgrading Tourism Facilities: A key priority is improving the quality of Iraq’s tourism infrastructure. This includes upgrading hotels, restaurants, and cafes to meet international standards, including ISO certification, ensuring a higher level of service for visitors.
  4. Training and Development: The MoUs also call for the implementation of training programs for employees in both the public and private sectors, enhancing the skills of those working in the tourism industry. This will help create a more professional workforce capable of meeting international tourism standards.
  5. Establishing a Regional Office in Baghdad: Another significant aspect of the agreement is the potential establishment of a regional office for the Arab Tourism Organization in Baghdad. This office will serve as a hub for the Levant region, facilitating greater collaboration and knowledge exchange between Iraq and neighboring countries.
  6. Arab Tourist Card: The launch of the Arab Tourist Card project in Baghdad, in partnership with Visa International, aims to create a unified, region-wide card for Arab tourists. This initiative will enhance travel convenience and encourage more tourism within the Arab world.
  7. Youth Training in Tourism Quality Control: The MoUs also include plans for specialized training programs designed to teach Iraqi youth how to implement quality control measures in tourism and hospitality facilities, ensuring a higher standard of service across the sector.

These agreements are part of Iraq’s broader strategy to revitalize its tourism industry, attract foreign investment, and enhance the country’s global standing as a key tourist destination in the region.
