Iraq Seizes Over 20 Locally Made Drones in Baghdad and Arrests Four Suspects

Iraqi security forces carried out new Baghdad drone seizures in Rusafa and arrested four suspects. The operation targeted unauthorized possession and trade of locally manufactured drones.

According to an official statement, security forces seized more than 20 drones. They also arrested four people during two separate operations.

Authorities conducted both operations with judicial approval, according to the statement. The actions came as Iraqi forces increased scrutiny of drone-related activity across the capital.

During questioning, the four suspects reportedly admitted possessing the drones for sale. Authorities subsequently began legal proceedings against them.

However, officials did not provide further details about the intended buyers. They also did not identify the drones’ potential civilian or military uses.

Furthermore, authorities did not say whether the suspects had connections to any armed faction. That information remains unclear as investigations continue.

The latest Baghdad drone seizures also follow another major security operation earlier this week.

Intelligence and counterterrorism forces recently dismantled a network allegedly preparing drone attacks. The group reportedly planned to use explosives during those attacks.

Government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi said authorities identified plans targeting unspecified locations. However, he declined to disclose the intended targets for security reasons.

The operation also coincided with the deployment of additional troops across Baghdad. Officials have not released the total number of suspects detained during that operation.

Nevertheless, the latest arrests underline growing security concerns surrounding unauthorized drone activity. Iraqi authorities have increasingly focused on controlling the use and movement of drones.

Locally produced drones can serve legitimate civilian purposes, including photography and commercial activities. However, authorities also monitor their potential use for security threats.

Therefore, officials continue to emphasize compliance with regulations governing drone ownership and trade. The latest operation demonstrates a broader effort to prevent unauthorized transfers.

Meanwhile, investigators are expected to determine where the seized drones came from. They may also establish who planned to purchase the equipment.

The authorities have not announced whether additional arrests could follow the investigation. They also have not disclosed whether the seized drones contained modifications.

For now, the Baghdad drone seizures represent the second major drone-related operation in five days. The developments highlight increased attention toward unmanned aircraft in Iraq’s capital.

Authorities are likely to maintain heightened security measures as investigations continue. Further findings could clarify the broader networks behind unauthorized drone trading.
