Iraq Approves Loan Agreement with AFD for Key Sewer Projects

Baghdad, Iraq- The Iraqi Council of Ministers has granted approval for the Minister of Finance, or her delegate, to sign a loan agreement with the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) to fund the Al-Hamza District Sewer Project in Al-Diwaniyah Province. This financing aligns with Federal Budget Law No. 13 of 2023, covering fiscal years 2023-2025, and supports the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities, and Public Works.

Alongside this decision, the Council approved modifications to Resolution No. 356 of 2021, which includes:

  • Authorizing the Minister of Finance to amend the additional financing loan agreement for the Al-Khalidiya Sewerage Project, also funded by AFD.
  • Approving the signing of an additional financing agreement for the project.

AFD, the French Development Agency, is a public financial institution that supports sustainable development projects worldwide. Its collaboration with Iraq aims to enhance essential infrastructure, particularly in water and sanitation services.

By securing these loans, Iraq is advancing key projects that will improve public health, expand sanitation networks, and boost environmental sustainability in affected regions. These agreements reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance basic services and infrastructure development through international cooperation.
