Fuad Hussein Lays Foundation Stone for New Palestinian Embassy in Baghdad

Iraq-Palestine relations reached a new milestone on Friday when Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein laid the foundation stone for the new Palestinian Embassy building in Baghdad. The ceremony took place in the capital’s main diplomatic zone and was attended by Palestinian Ambassador Ahmad al-Ruwaidi.

At the event, Hussein expressed pride in Iraq’s continued commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause. He noted that the embassy’s location in a key diplomatic area reflects Iraq’s strategic efforts to strengthen ties with Palestine. Moreover, he said the area would soon host several other foreign missions, making it an important hub for international cooperation.

During a joint press conference following the ceremony, Hussein emphasized Iraq’s unwavering position on Palestine. He reaffirmed Baghdad’s dedication to political dialogue, humanitarian support for Gaza, and regional stability. Furthermore, he highlighted that Iraq stands firmly with the Palestinian people in their pursuit of self-determination and peace.

In addition, Hussein stated that the construction of the embassy symbolizes a shared vision for a stronger and more stable Middle East. He pointed out that Iraq will continue to back international efforts aimed at ending violence and promoting coexistence in the region.

For his part, Ambassador al-Ruwaidi expressed deep appreciation for Iraq’s consistent support. He emphasized that the new embassy represents not only a diplomatic milestone but also a symbol of trust and friendship. Moreover, he pledged to work toward establishing an Iraqi embassy in Jerusalem, which would further solidify Iraq-Palestine relations.

Al-Ruwaidi also spoke about the importance of historical and political connections between Iraq and Palestine. He described them as bonds rooted in shared struggles and mutual respect. Additionally, he said that the embassy will play a vital role in expanding cooperation in education, trade, and cultural exchange.

The new Palestinian Embassy will be located in Baghdad’s growing diplomatic district, a modern development launched in late October 2024. The project spans roughly 3,000 dunams and is divided into 78 plots. Notably, 40 of these plots are already occupied by other embassies and diplomatic missions, highlighting Baghdad’s increasing role as a regional diplomatic center.

As the ceremony concluded, both sides expressed optimism about future collaboration. They stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and expanding political coordination to serve both peoples’ interests. In conclusion, the new embassy marks a significant step forward in Iraq-Palestine relations, reflecting a shared commitment to progress, peace, and mutual respect.
