Baghdad Strengthens Rain Preparedness Ahead of Seasonal Showers

Baghdad Rain Preparedness is now at its peak, the municipality confirmed on Saturday, ahead of forecasted seasonal showers. Baghdad Municipality announced the completion of major technical and service preparations, including maintenance of key drainage lines, ensuring that the city’s water-discharge capacity remains within planned limits.

Municipality spokesman Uday al-Jundeel told the state news agency that all service teams have fully completed rainy season preparations. The readiness plan began in August 2025 under the direct guidance of Baghdad’s Mayor. It covered all municipal directorates and the Baghdad Sewerage Directorate.

Al-Jundeel explained that teams maintained trunk lines and main stations. They also treated subsidence, rehabilitated secondary stations, and intensified cleaning campaigns. Teams used modern techniques, including the bucket machine, to remove heavy sediment. Deputy Mayor Razaq al-Yaqubi visited the sites daily to supervise and ensure accuracy.

He emphasized that Baghdad has entered a “state of maximum readiness.”Furthermore, all wastewater stations and disposal sites operate at full capacity. In addition, fuel for generators is secured, and emergency plans are active. “We are ready for any incident,” he said.

Regarding network capacity, al-Jundeel noted that the system can discharge 24.5 millimeters of rainfall within 12 hours, keeping operations within technical control. However, rainfall exceeding that threshold may require additional time for the network to absorb inflow.

Moreover, a joint operations room will coordinate efforts once rain begins. Meanwhile, ministry and civil defense representatives actively monitor the situation. Additionally, field teams and machinery move across the city to ensure smooth services and traffic flow.

The national weather authority predicts rain across Iraq starting Sunday. Thunderstorms may strike northern and central regions, while southern areas will experience steady rainfall. Rainfall should range from light to moderate through December 10. Visibility may drop to 2–5 kilometers, and winds may reach 10–30 km/h, rising to 40 km/h in some areas as rainfall intensifies.

City officials urge residents to follow safety guidelines. Municipal authorities maintain vigilance and enforce Baghdad Rain Preparedness, actively protecting citizens and infrastructure during this seasonal challenge.
