Sudani and Macron Address Rising Iraq Security Threat After Drone Attack

Iraq now faces a growing security threat after a drone strike killed a French soldier near Makhmur. The attack marks the first French military fatality in the ongoing conflict. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani expressed condolences for the soldier’s death and emphasized Iraq’s responsibility to protect coalition forces.

Moreover, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed his conversation with al-Sudani on Friday. He described the attack as “unacceptable” and praised the Iraqi government’s efforts to investigate the incident. Macron also thanked Iraq for working to strengthen protective measures for international forces stationed in the region.

Meanwhile, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also condemned the strike. He stressed the Iraqi government must act decisively to prevent future attacks, punish those responsible, and protect Iraq’s interests with the global community. In addition, Barzani highlighted the sacrifices of international forces who assist Iraq in combating terrorism.

Armed groups aligned with Iran, some officially part of Iraq’s security forces, have increasingly carried out drone, missile, and rocket attacks across the region. Consequently, these actions intensify tensions and escalate the Iraq security threat to both military and civilian targets. For instance, the Kurdistan Region has endured over 200 strikes since February 28. These attacks have killed four people and injured 19, according to Community Peacemaker Teams – Iraqi Kurdistan.

The strikes have targeted military bases, diplomatic missions, airports, oil facilities, and residential areas in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah governorates. Iran-aligned armed groups, including elements of the IRGC, have claimed responsibility for many of these attacks. As a result, local authorities remain on high alert, reinforcing security at key installations.

Furthermore, al-Sudani stressed that Iraq’s constitutional institutions will take all necessary measures to counter threats and protect coalition forces. The Prime Minister vowed that Iraq would coordinate closely with international partners to stabilize the situation. Analysts warn that the Iraq security threat could disrupt energy supplies, trade, and regional cooperation if attacks continue unchecked.

The situation underlines Iraq’s growing vulnerability amid escalating regional conflict. Authorities continue urging vigilance, coordination, and decisive action to safeguard security forces, civilians, and vital infrastructure across all governorates.
