Iraq Confronts Widening Conflict Across Federal and Kurdish Regions

Iraq faces a growing regional war threat that endangers its infrastructure, energy systems, and supply chains. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani warned on Saturday that the conflict is spreading rapidly, putting the country at risk. He emphasized that all decisions on war and peace belong to Iraq’s state institutions.

During a meeting with Shia and Sunni religious leaders, Sudani highlighted the urgent challenges confronting the country. “The regional war threat has expanded, and all parties now face imminent danger,” he said. He insisted that Iraq’s government remains the only authority responsible for handling war decisions.

Moreover, armed groups aligned with Iran, some officially part of Iraq’s security forces, have joined the conflict. Consequently, they launched drone and rocket attacks across federal Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and neighboring areas. These actions, therefore, increase tensions and significantly raise the stakes for Iraq’s stability.

In addition, Sudani condemned assaults on diplomatic missions and coalition force headquarters. For instance, early Saturday, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone suffered an attack, sending thick smoke into the air. Meanwhile, the UAE Consulate in Erbil was hit the same day, marking the second attack in one week and injuring two security personnel.

“The state, through its constitutional institutions, will pursue all responsible parties,” Sudani declared. He also criticized strikes on PMF members embedded within Iraq’s security forces. “We will protect our service members and respond to any threats against them,” he added, just hours after warplanes hit PMF positions in Tuz Khurmatu district, wounding four fighters, two seriously.

No country has claimed responsibility for the strikes on PMF positions. The PMF confirmed that 32 airstrikes have targeted its locations in seven governorates since the conflict began on February 28. Meanwhile, Iran-aligned factions operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq umbrella, including Kataib Hezbollah, Asaib Ahl al-Haq, Kataib Imam Ali, and Harakat al-Nujaba, claimed responsibility for numerous drone and rocket attacks against U.S.-linked targets.

Analysts warn that the regional war threat could destabilize Iraq further, affecting energy exports, trade, and public safety. Authorities continue to call for vigilance, coordinated response, and stronger security measures across all regions.

The Prime Minister stressed that Iraq will face the crisis united and maintain control over its sovereign decisions.
