Iraq’s Ministry of Oil Launches Bazargan Projects to Boost Energy and Renewable Power

Iraq’s Ministry of Oil announced on Saturday the launch of four major projects at the Bazargan Oil Field in Maysan Province. Officials said these initiatives mark a key step toward strengthening Iraq’s energy infrastructure and supporting sustainable power generation.

Speaking at a press conference, Deputy Minister of Oil for Extraction Affairs Bassem Mohammed Khudair explained that the projects are part of the ministry’s broader strategy. The aim is to modernize oilfield operations and improve supporting infrastructure. Khudair said the first project establishes an administrative and residential camp for Maysan oilfield staff. In addition,He added that this facility will improve working conditions for technical and engineering personnel.

Khudair highlighted that the second project involves a Training and Technology Institute. The institute will develop local expertise and enhance technical skills according to international oil industry standards. The third project launches a Smart Operations Management Center. It will use advanced digital systems to monitor production, increase efficiency, and support real-time decision-making.

The fourth project is the first phase of a solar power plant with a capacity of 10 megawatts. Khudair said this initiative reflects Iraq’s growing commitment to renewable energy. He added that the solar project will reduce emissions, cut operational costs, and provide stable electricity for oilfield operations.

Furthermore, Khudair noted that all projects align with Iraq’s long-term oil policy. The ministry aims to expand production capacity while ensuring sufficient gas supplies for electricity generation. “The role of Iraq’s Ministry of Oil is to secure fuel for power stations,” he said, emphasizing coordination with the Ministry of Electricity to provide continuous power in Maysan Province.

Khudair also described the Integrated Gas Growth Project in Basra, implemented with TotalEnergies, as a cornerstone of Iraq’s energy transition. The project is expected to generate 1,000 megawatts in four phases, each producing 250 megawatts.

Officials stated that the newly inaugurated projects at Bazargan Oil Field will enhance operational efficiency, workforce skills, and energy diversification. Lastly, They added that these developments strengthen Maysan’s role as a central hub in Iraq’s oil and gas sector.
