UN Representative Highlights the Vital Role of Iraqi Women and Constitution on International Women’s Day

Baghdad, Iraq- On Saturday, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and Head of the UNAMI Mission, Mohammed Al-Hassan, emphasized the significant role of Iraqi women in society, describing the Iraqi constitution as one of the most advanced in the region. He praised the many contributions of Iraqi women throughout history, acknowledging their sacrifices despite difficult circumstances.

Speaking at an event to mark International Women’s Day, Al-Hassan expressed his pleasure in celebrating Iraqi women, both past and present. He noted that Iraqi women have always been honorable models for others, their names etched in history for their contributions to humanity. Al-Hassan referred not only to contemporary history but also to Iraq’s long-standing civilizational legacy, a source of pride for the people of the country.

However, Al-Hassan also pointed out that Iraqi women still have limited representation in decision-making positions. He stressed that it is high time for Iraqi women to occupy more significant and responsible roles within the circles of power. “There is no harm in recalling history, but the focus must be on how to improve the future and transform challenges into opportunities,” he stated. He encouraged the idea of imagining a future where an Iraqi woman holds the highest positions in government, including the Presidency, Prime Minister, or Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Al-Hassan highlighted that the Iraqi constitution provides a solid framework for women’s participation in shaping the country’s future, noting that it remains one of the most advanced constitutions in the region. He further emphasized that both the constitution and the judiciary are essential pillars of the nation, with a responsibility to maintain an honest judiciary as a sacred national duty.

Reflecting on Iraq’s unique status and cultural heritage, Al-Hassan underscored the country’s potential to develop plans and visions that align with its traditions and empower Iraqi women. From Al-Faw in the south to Zakho in the north, he affirmed that Iraqi women carry their culture and history with pride.

In conclusion, Al-Hassan reassured the international community that the United Nations will continue to support the ambitions and aspirations of Iraqi women, helping them achieve their rightful place in society and leadership.
