Iraq Explores Green Hydrogen and Low-Emission Cement Projects

Green energy projects Iraq are gaining momentum as the Ministry of Industry takes new steps toward a low-emission economy. The ministry confirmed it is studying green hydrogen and low-emission cement initiatives while developing partnerships with the Ministries of Electricity and Oil, along with the National Investment Commission.

According to spokesperson Duha Al-Jubouri, the ministry is adopting a clear strategic direction to integrate green industries into its structure and future plans. This approach supports sustainable development and reduces carbon emissions. It also contributes to building a diversified and eco-friendly industrial economy.

In addition, the ministry is supporting the national initiative for energy and emissions reduction. It plans to increase efficiency in energy use and rely more on clean energy sources, especially solar power in the industrial sector.

Furthermore, the ministry announced that its companies are ready to implement solar energy projects. This includes providing subsidized solar systems, aligned with the government’s plan to raise solar capacity to 12 gigawatts by 2030. Green energy projects Iraq also include localizing production of solar panel components to strengthen Iraq’s renewable energy manufacturing base.

Al-Jubouri emphasized that the ministry is expanding partnerships with the private sector. It also coordinates closely with the Ministries of Electricity and Oil, as well as the National Investment Commission. Together, they aim to launch joint clean energy ventures and assess the feasibility of producing green hydrogen.

Moreover, the Ministry of Industry recognizes its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, it has begun implementing measures that support a transition to a low-emission economic model, aligned with national economic and environmental goals.

The ministry has compiled detailed reports on its green industry achievements. These reports are often prepared with the Ministries of Environment and Planning or in cooperation with international organizations.

The proposed projects focus on two main areas. The first involves expanding renewable energy sources by integrating solar systems into buildings and industrial processes. This includes upgrading production lines for solar stations and equipment, which do not emit harmful gases.

The second area targets green hydrogen production, particularly within the fertilizer sector. Notably, the Ministry of Oil has already started constructing the first green hydrogen project for the South Refineries Company. This major step will offer a cleaner fuel alternative, in line with the seventh Sustainable Development Goal.

So far, 10–15% of the ministry’s administrative and experimental sites have been equipped with small-scale solar systems. The ministry aims to reach 30% by 2030. In parallel, government-run cement plants have begun producing low-emission cement, which reduces emissions by 15–20% compared to traditional cement. The ministry plans to gradually expand this technology across all plants.

Ultimately, green energy projects Iraq reflect a strategic shift toward sustainability. The government’s ongoing investments and coordination with other sectors underscore its long-term commitment to environmental responsibility and industrial innovation.
