Building Climate Resilience in Southern Iraq

A major international initiative has been launched to enhance Climate Resilience in Southern Iraq, focusing on vulnerable agricultural communities. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), announced the project in coordination with Iraqi ministries. The announcement took place during the 5th Baghdad International Water Conference, which brought together government officials, foreign partners, and UN representatives.

The new program, named Strengthening Climate Resilience of Vulnerable Agricultural Livelihoods in Southern Iraq(SRVALI), is backed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). With a total investment of $39 million, this initiative aims to help rural families in Karbala, Najaf, and Muthanna. These provinces face increasing threats from drought, land degradation, and severe water shortages.

The funding for SRVALI includes strong support from both the Canadian government and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). Their contribution ensures that financial resources match the scale of the environmental challenges in these areas.

Qu Dongyu emphasized that the initiative highlights Iraq’s growing inter-ministerial collaboration. He noted that several ministries—including environment, water resources, planning, and agriculture—worked closely together during the development of the project. Their joint efforts reflect a strong national commitment to long-term environmental sustainability.

Key components of the project include improving irrigation systems to boost water efficiency and introducing solar-powered technologies. These upgrades aim to reduce the impact of water scarcity on farming. The project also plans to restore degraded lands and promote better land and water management techniques.

Beyond environmental upgrades, SRVALI aims to support local communities through education and digital tools. The campaign will empower rural women and young people by providing access to early warning systems and risk-reduction technologies. These efforts will help local populations adapt faster to climate-related disruptions.

As Iraq faces increasing pressure from climate change, this project represents a timely and strategic response. By building Climate Resilience in Southern Iraq, stakeholders are creating a model for sustainable rural development. The initiative combines technology, training, and cooperation to deliver practical results.

With the rollout underway, partners remain optimistic about the program’s long-term impact. Continued collaboration and community involvement are expected to play a vital role in reinforcing Climate Resilience in Southern Iraq for generations to come.
