Iraq Strengthens Power With Turkmen Gas Deal

Turkmen gas deal Iraq continues to advance as part of national efforts to solve electricity shortages during summer peaks. The Iraqi cabinet approved new steps to import gas from Turkmenistan, aiming to increase fuel supply for power plants.

The plan includes importing up to 15 million cubic meters of gas per day. This volume could support an extra 2,000 megawatts of electricity. Iraq already signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkmenistan in 2023. Now, implementation requires further coordination, especially with Iran for transit routes.

Currently, Iraq relies heavily on gas imports from Iran. These imports supply nearly one-third of the country’s electricity demand. However, recent shortfalls from Iran created critical challenges for the energy sector. That’s why Baghdad is seeking more stable sources.

Importantly, the Turkmen gas deal Iraq includes transit through Iran’s existing pipeline network. This route will transfer Turkmen gas directly to Iraq. Over time, this will reduce Iraq’s dependence on one country and offer more flexibility.

Nonetheless, progress faces hurdles. The Trade Bank of Iraq has struggled to issue letters of credit for the purchase. US sanctions on Iran have blocked routine financial transactions, delaying the project’s rollout.

Despite these obstacles, the government remains committed to this strategy. Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel recently visited Turkmenistan. His visit aimed to finalize technical aspects and speed up delivery.

Fadel confirmed that gas from Turkmenistan will move through Iran’s pipelines, already connected to Iraq. This infrastructure simplifies the transport process. Therefore, Iraq expects improved supply reliability in the near future.

Over the next five years, this cooperation is expected to grow. Eventually, the agreement will ensure a consistent gas flow to Iraqi power plants.

By focusing on the Turkmen gas deal Iraq, the government demonstrates clear intent to solve long-term energy issues. Moreover, this shift supports sustainable development and energy security nationwide.
