Iraq Achieves Milestone in Maritime Regulation with IMO Certification

Baghdad, Iraq- Iraq has reached a significant milestone in maritime regulation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) officially recognizing an Iraqi auditor for the first time. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director-General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, confirmed on Wednesday that Captain Zain Al-Abidin Adel Abdul Munim has been certified as an accredited auditor under the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS).

The certification is expected to play a crucial role in preparing Iraq for a mandatory IMO audit, ensuring that the country’s ports and maritime operations are fully compliant with international regulations. Al-Fartousi emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “This will help Iraq navigate the IMO’s compulsory audit process and enhance our ability to meet its requirements. It is a major step forward in aligning Iraq’s ports with international safety and security standards.”

This achievement marks a vital step in Iraq’s efforts to modernize its maritime infrastructure, improve port operations, and strengthen global confidence in its adherence to international maritime standards.
