Iraq and Iran Push for Deeper Ties Amid Regional Tensions

Iraq-Iran cooperation took center stage in Baghdad on Wednesday. Iraqi President Nizar Amedi and Parliament Speaker Haibet al-Halbousi met Iranian Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

The meetings focused on regional developments and stronger bilateral relations. Meanwhile, officials discussed ways to expand cooperation across several sectors.

Amedi and Ghalibaf examined opportunities to deepen relations between Baghdad and Tehran. They also discussed cooperation that could benefit both countries and the wider region.

Moreover, Amedi reaffirmed Iraq’s support for diplomatic efforts across the region. He called for dialogue to resolve disputes and address ongoing crises.

The Iraqi president also highlighted the importance of lasting regional stability. According to his office, diplomacy could create better conditions for security and development.

Ghalibaf, meanwhile, emphasized the historic relationship between Iran and Iraq. He described the ties between both countries as longstanding and important.

Furthermore, the Iranian speaker stressed Tehran’s commitment to coordination with Baghdad. He pointed to cooperation across political, economic, and other fields.

The discussions also placed particular attention on parliamentary relations. Halbousi and Ghalibaf discussed activating joint committees between the two legislatures.

They also explored ways to strengthen parliamentary coordination and expand cooperation. Halbousi stressed the importance of closer ties between the neighboring countries.

In addition, the Iraqi parliament speaker highlighted Iraq’s position within regional developments. He said Iraq remains among the countries most affected by regional tensions.

Halbousi also raised concerns about Iraq’s economic interests. In particular, he called for special consideration of Iraqi oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz.

Such measures, he argued, could help protect Iraq’s economic interests amid regional uncertainty. The issue carries particular importance for Iraq’s energy-dependent economy.

Ghalibaf also placed economic cooperation high on Tehran’s agenda. He identified trade and economic sectors as key areas for stronger bilateral engagement.

At the same time, he called for improved mechanisms between the two parliaments. He also urged both sides to monitor existing agreements and ensure their implementation.

Iraq-Iran cooperation also featured in Ghalibaf’s meeting with Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi.

The Iranian official met the Iraqi prime minister later Wednesday in Baghdad. Their discussions covered several security and economic priorities.

According to the prime minister’s office, border security featured prominently during the meeting. Counterterrorism efforts and bilateral economic cooperation also formed part of the talks.

The two sides additionally discussed implementing existing agreements between Baghdad and Tehran. Their discussions come as regional tensions continue shaping Iraq’s political and economic environment.

Ghalibaf currently plays a prominent role in Tehran’s negotiations with Washington. His Baghdad meetings therefore carry wider significance amid continuing regional diplomatic efforts.

Overall, the discussions highlighted the growing focus on Iraq-Iran cooperation. Both sides emphasized dialogue, economic ties, security coordination, and parliamentary engagement.
