Iraq-Kuwait Relations Strengthen as Kuwait Releases Five Iraqi Fishermen

Iraq-Kuwait relations continued to strengthen on Wednesday as Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein visited Kuwait. The visit marked his first official Gulf trip since Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi formed the new government. Moreover, the discussions focused on expanding cooperation and resolving shared concerns through direct dialogue.

Hussein led a high-level Iraqi delegation during the official visit. The delegation included the national security adviser, the governor of Basra, and senior Foreign Ministry officials. Together, they met with top Kuwaiti officials to discuss several bilateral issues. Furthermore, both sides highlighted the importance of maintaining close communication and strengthening regional cooperation.

During the meetings, Iraqi officials requested the release of five Iraqi fishermen from the Al-Faw district. Kuwaiti coast guard forces detained the fishermen last week. Shortly after the request, Kuwaiti authorities approved their release. Consequently, the decision brought positive results for both countries and their ongoing diplomatic efforts.

According to an official statement, the fishermen will return to Basra after completing all legal procedures. Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani will accompany them during their return journey. Officials expect the group to arrive later the same day, bringing relief to their families and local communities.

Hussein announced the development while visiting Kuwait. He explained that the release followed direct discussions with Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah. Additionally, Iraqi officials praised the constructive response from the Kuwaiti government.

The foreign minister expressed appreciation for Kuwait’s quick cooperation throughout the discussions. He said the decision reflected the spirit of friendship between the neighboring countries. Furthermore, he stressed that open dialogue remains the best path for resolving shared challenges.

The visit also provided an opportunity to strengthen political and diplomatic coordination. Both sides explored ways to expand cooperation across several sectors. They discussed regional stability, border coordination, and continued communication between government institutions. As a result, officials reaffirmed their commitment to building stronger partnerships.

In addition, Hussein emphasized that Iraq seeks balanced relations with neighboring Gulf countries. He noted that regular diplomatic engagement creates opportunities for practical solutions. Therefore, both governments continue to prioritize dialogue over confrontation.

Officials also described the release of the fishermen as a humanitarian gesture. They believe the decision will encourage greater trust between Baghdad and Kuwait City. Moreover, it highlights both governments’ willingness to address sensitive matters through mutual understanding.

The visit carries broader diplomatic significance for Iraq’s new administration. It signals the government’s intention to deepen regional partnerships from the beginning of its term. At the same time, Kuwait continues to demonstrate support for constructive engagement with Iraq.

Iraq-Kuwait relations have steadily improved through continued diplomatic exchanges and practical cooperation. The latest developments reflect that positive momentum. Meanwhile, both countries continue to seek solutions that benefit their people and strengthen regional stability.

Looking ahead, officials from both nations expect further meetings in the coming months. They aim to expand cooperation in security, economic development, and cross-border coordination. Iraq-Kuwait relations remain an important foundation for achieving those shared goals while promoting lasting cooperation across the region.
