Iraq’s Anbar Gas Boom Draws Major Energy Investors

Al-Anbar province is trying to attract major energy investment after years of conflict and instability. The western Iraqi province now wants to turn its gas reserves into economic growth.

The Iraq Anbar gas push gained momentum after Schlumberger resumed work at the Akaz gas field. The return of the U.S.-based oilfield services company signals stronger confidence in the province’s investment climate.

Al-Anbar government spokesperson Muayad al-Dulaimi said the province no longer faces major security obstacles. He added that investors now face financial and administrative challenges instead.

Moreover, al-Dulaimi said bureaucracy in Baghdad continues to slow major projects. He pointed to investment approvals and licensing procedures as key problems.

Akaz remains one of Iraq’s important non-associated gas fields. The field sits in western Al-Anbar and holds large proven reserves. It also carries a major long-term production target.

The Ministry of Oil wants Akaz to help supply gas for power generation. Therefore, the field could support the Al-Anbar power plant, which remains under development.

In addition, the project could reduce Iraq’s need for imported gas. Iraq still depends heavily on foreign gas to support electricity production. As a result, local gas development has become a national priority.

Meanwhile, KAR Group is preparing another major gas project in Al-Anbar. The Erbil-based energy company secured the Al-Khliesiea exploration block through Iraq’s licensing process.

The block covers a wide area near the Al-Anbar-Nineveh border. It also sits close to Iraq’s frontier with Syria. Early exploration signs have shown positive gas indicators.

Al-Dulaimi said the provincial government will support the company’s work. He also said the project could create jobs and support local development.

The Iraq Anbar gas push could therefore change the province’s economic image. For years, many investors viewed Al-Anbar through a security lens. However, officials now want businesses to see opportunity.

Al-Khliesiea forms part of a wider group of hydrocarbon blocks in western Iraq. These blocks include areas across Al-Anbar and nearby provinces. Together, they show the size of Iraq’s untapped gas potential.

Economic analyst Ahmed al-Karbouli said major companies can help improve Iraq’s business environment. However, he warned that investment success needs more than security.

He said Iraq must improve laws, decisions, and coordination between local and federal bodies. Furthermore, he said companies need faster approvals and clearer rules.

Al-Karbouli argued that administrative complexity remains Iraq’s biggest investment barrier. Licensing delays, unclear regulations, and overlapping powers often discourage energy companies.

Therefore, he called for real reform in the investment system. He also urged officials to create one approval window for investors.

In addition, he said greater transparency could improve confidence in licensing rounds. Clearer procedures could also help Iraq attract stronger foreign capital.

The Iraq Anbar gas push also connects to Iraq’s wider energy goals. The country wants to reduce gas flaring and use more domestic resources. It also wants to support power plants, factories, petrochemicals, and fertilizer production.

Iraq ranks among the world’s biggest gas-flaring countries. Therefore, better gas management could raise revenue and reduce waste.

If officials manage Akaz and Al-Khliesiea effectively, Al-Anbar could gain a new economic role. The province could move from conflict recovery toward energy-led growth.

Still, investors will watch government action closely. Security has improved, but bureaucracy still threatens progress. Therefore, Iraq must match its energy ambitions with faster decisions.
