US Warns of Diplomatic Rupture as Al-Maliki Pushes PM Bid

US warns of diplomatic rupture as tensions rise over Nouri Al-Maliki’s bid to return as Iraq’s prime minister. American officials delivered a direct message on Wednesday. They said his selection could severely damage ties between Washington and Baghdad. From the outset, US warns of diplomatic rupture as a central warning to Iraqi political leaders.

Moreover, officials stressed that policy has not changed. President Donald Trump continues to oppose Al-Maliki’s candidacy. Therefore, the administration stands firm against his potential return to power. A State Department spokesperson rejected claims of any softening in position.

When asked about reports of a US “deadline,” the spokesperson dismissed the claim. Instead, officials repeated a clear warning. If Iraqi leaders move forward with Al-Maliki, Washington will reassess its relationship with Iraq. Consequently, diplomatic and economic ties could face new strain.

In addition, the spokesperson outlined three main priorities guiding US policy. First, Washington seeks to curb the influence of Iran-backed militias in Iraqi politics. Second, officials want to reduce Tehran’s sway over Iraqi state institutions. Finally, the administration aims to strengthen economic partnerships with allies aligned with US objectives.

Meanwhile, the Shiite Coordination Framework nominated Al-Maliki for the premiership. The coalition holds more than half of Iraq’s 329 parliamentary seats. As a result, it plays a decisive role in government formation. Political observers expect intense negotiations in the coming days.

Al-Maliki led Iraq from 2006 to 2014. During that time, he managed major security and political challenges. However, critics argue that his leadership deepened sectarian tensions. Supporters, on the other hand, say he provided stability during years of unrest.

Despite mounting pressure, Al-Maliki shows no sign of stepping aside. Sources close to the coalition confirm that no meeting is scheduled to reconsider his nomination. Therefore, his candidacy remains active and politically sensitive.

Earlier remarks from Trump intensified the debate. He warned that Iraq would face serious consequences under Al-Maliki’s leadership. He also stated that Washington would reconsider its support if Al-Maliki assumes office. Through these statements, US warns of diplomatic rupture in clear and direct terms.

At the same time, Iraqi factions continue private discussions to shape the next government. Lawmakers must balance internal alliances with international realities. In this tense climate, US warns of diplomatic rupture while Iraq’s political future hangs in the balance.
