National Campaign Warns Against Antibiotic Misuse

Health experts continue to sound the misuse of antibiotics warning as a national campaign gains momentum. The Iraqi Pharmacists Syndicate, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, has launched an initiative to tackle this issue.

The head of the Syndicate, Osama Hadi, explained the campaign’s goals. He said the focus targets both pharmacists and the general public. The campaign stresses the dangers of taking antibiotics without a prescription.According to Hadi, self-medicating with antibiotics creates serious health risks. He explained that unsupervised use may weaken the immune system significantly. Furthermore, bacteria can develop resistance to those drugs.

He emphasized that such resistance can lead to treatment failure. When antibiotics stop working, even minor infections may become life-threatening. In severe cases, complications may result in death. The misuse of antibiotics warning echoes throughout the medical community. Hadi noted that awareness must start with professionals. Pharmacists should take responsibility by refusing to sell antibiotics without valid prescriptions. At the same time, the campaign urges the public to avoid self-diagnosing. Hadi urged people to consult doctors before taking any antibiotics. He pointed out that incorrect use can turn common illnesses into dangerous conditions.

Infections caused by viruses, such as the cold or flu, do not require antibiotics. Hadi stated that using antibiotics in such cases has no benefit. Instead, it exposes the body to unnecessary risks. He also mentioned the long-term public health implications. If resistance spreads, it could cause future treatments to fail. Hospitals and clinics would struggle to manage even routine infections. The misuse of antibiotics warning serves as a vital message. It reminds citizens that antibiotics are powerful tools—not casual medications. Proper medical guidance remains essential for using them safely. The campaign will continue with workshops, educational sessions, and media outreach. The goal is to build a culture that respects medical advice and prioritizes public safety.
