Baghdad, Iraq- On Saturday, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, presented ten proposals aimed at bolstering support for Palestine and preventing the displacement of Gaza’s population.
In a statement issued by his media office, Al-Mashhadani reaffirmed Iraq’s unwavering solidarity with Palestine, particularly with Gaza, highlighting that Iraq continues to stand with the Palestinian people in both spirit and action. He acknowledged the ongoing hardship faced by the people of Gaza, especially in the aftermath of October 7, and underscored Iraq’s commitment to supporting them.
Al-Mashhadani’s proposals are centered on a series of legislative and political actions aimed at protecting Palestinians and Gaza from further suffering. These include:
- Issuing Unified Legislation: Arab parliaments should pass laws rejecting the displacement of Gaza’s population, prohibiting the transfer of any part of the Palestinian people to countries like Jordan or Egypt.
- Criminalizing Contributions to Attacks: Enacting laws that criminalize countries and companies, including those in the technology and AI sectors, that contribute to targeting Palestinians, based on evidence that Zionist forces have used foreign expertise for targeting civilians.
- Urgent Aid for Gaza: Encouraging Arab parliaments to pass legislation that facilitates the provision of both material and moral support to Gaza, particularly in preparation for Ramadan, and facilitating the entry of aid and treatment for the wounded through Arab-Islamic cooperation.
- Investment Fund for Reconstruction: Establishing an Arab-Islamic investment fund dedicated to the reconstruction of Gaza and the West Bank, while also strengthening sovereignty over Jerusalem.
- Grants for Gaza and the West Bank: Proposing urgent and deferred grants for Gaza and the West Bank by compelling governments to ensure these grants are collected and distributed effectively.
- Supporting UNRWA: Working through parliamentary channels to ensure the continued operation of UNRWA, opposing any efforts, especially by the Zionist entity, to halt its work.
- Economic Support for Gaza and the West Bank: Focusing on enhancing the local economy of Gaza and the West Bank through direct and indirect support, aiming to alleviate poverty and guarantee a decent standard of living for their populations.
- Exempting Palestinian Goods from Taxes: Issuing legislation that exempts goods produced in Palestine, including crops and marine fishing, from taxes and customs duties, as a way to support local production.
- Criminalizing Normalization: Introducing laws in Arab parliaments that criminalize any form of normalization with the Zionist entity unless a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital is established.
- Unified Islamic Parliamentary Action: Calling for Islamic countries’ parliaments to adopt a unified stance in support of Palestine and its people, ensuring consistent and unwavering international support for their cause.
These proposals reflect a broad and comprehensive approach to supporting Palestine, tackling the root causes of the ongoing conflict, and ensuring that the Palestinian people are not abandoned in their struggle for justice and sovereignty.
