Iraq’s Ministry of Finance Denies Claims of Salary Cuts for Military and Police Personnel

Baghdad, Iraq- Iraq’s Ministry of Finance issued a denial regarding statements attributed to Finance Minister Taif Sami, which claimed that military and police salaries would be cut. The ministry clarified that these statements, which had been circulating on social media, were false.

In its official statement, the ministry rejected the claims that Minister Sami had suggested the delay in implementing the salary scale law was due to the high salaries of military and police personnel. The ministry stressed that there was no call from the finance minister for salary reductions for these groups.

“These claims, along with other misleading information, are baseless,” the ministry said, warning that any rumors or fabricated statements intended to distort fiscal policies would be subject to legal action. It also urged the public and individuals to refrain from spreading unverified information.

The controversy stemmed from an alleged statement by Minister Sami, which had been shared on social media. The statement falsely claimed that the delay in passing the salary scale law and the allocation of funds was due to the high salaries of the army, police, and Popular Mobilization Forces, and suggested that a salary reduction from 1.6 million to one million dinars was necessary to address the budget deficit.
