Iraq’s First Asthma Inhaler Production Line Opens to Boost Local Drug Industry

Iraq’s first asthma inhaler production line officially began operations on Wednesday at the Baghdad Factory for Medical Gases and Pharmaceuticals. The landmark project marks a major step for Iraq’s pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, the initiative aims to strengthen domestic medicine production and reduce dependence on imported respiratory treatments.

The State Company for Marketing Drugs and Medical Appliances in Samarra (SDI) announced the launch during an official ceremony. Furthermore, SDI described the project as an important achievement for Iraq’s healthcare and manufacturing sectors. Officials also highlighted the factory’s role in supporting long-term pharmaceutical security.

The new facility can produce up to nine million inhaler canisters each year. In addition, engineers designed the production line to expand quickly as market demand grows. This flexibility allows Iraq to meet future domestic needs while preparing for regional export opportunities.

SDI Director-General Mohammad Abdul-Qader Al-Nuaimi said the project resulted from a strategic public-private partnership. He explained that cooperation between the public and private sectors accelerated development. As a result, the company completed the advanced production line in line with national industrial goals.

The project also follows directives from Industry and Minerals Minister Mohammad Nouri. He has encouraged greater investment in local manufacturing. Consequently, the ministry continues efforts to replace imported medicines with Iraqi-made alternatives whenever possible.

Iraq’s first asthma inhaler production line introduces technology that has never operated inside the country before. The factory specializes in manufacturing pressurized metered-dose inhalers, commonly known as pMDIs. These devices require advanced engineering and strict quality standards throughout production.

The production line will eventually manufacture nine different respiratory medicines. However, technicians have already completed successful trial batches for two asthma treatments. These medicines include Butadin and Samazone. Both products now move through the final stages of laboratory testing and regulatory review.

Officials confirmed that the Ministry of Health currently reviews both inhalers. Once the ministry completes laboratory validation and registration procedures, SDI will begin commercial distribution. The inhalers will then reach government hospitals and private pharmacies across Iraq.

The project represents more than a manufacturing achievement. Instead, it reflects Iraq’s broader strategy to strengthen national industries. For many years, the country relied heavily on imported respiratory medicines. Therefore, Iraq spent significant amounts of foreign currency to secure essential asthma treatments.

Local production offers several economic and healthcare benefits. First, domestic manufacturing can improve supply stability. Second, it can help reduce shortages during periods of global market disruption. Third, local production supports industrial growth while creating new employment opportunities.

In addition, greater domestic production may contribute to more stable prices for asthma patients. Affordable access remains important because many patients require inhalers throughout the year. Local manufacturing could also reduce transportation costs and shorten delivery times.

Industry officials believe the new facility will strengthen Iraq’s pharmaceutical capabilities over the coming years. They also expect continued investment in advanced medical manufacturing. As production expands, Iraq hopes to meet national demand before supplying neighboring markets.

Iraq’s first asthma inhaler production line highlights the country’s commitment to modernizing its pharmaceutical sector. At the same time, the project supports healthcare resilience, industrial development, and greater self-sufficiency. Officials believe this milestone will encourage further investment in advanced medicine production and position Iraq as an emerging pharmaceutical manufacturer in the Middle East.
