Baghdad, Iraq- On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez.

The discussion focused on the collaborative efforts between Iraq and the IMO, highlighting the organization’s support in key areas such as training, regulatory frameworks, and the ratification of relevant agreements and protocols by Iraq.

The Prime Minister emphasized Iraq’s dedication to enhancing its relationship with the IMO, particularly in advancing the development of its port infrastructure. He also mentioned the ongoing efforts to complete the Al-Faw Grand Port and the Development Road project.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister noted Iraq’s eagerness for the upcoming audit of IMO member states, scheduled for November, which would enable the registration of the Iraqi flag on vessels involved in international trade.

In response, the IMO Secretary-General praised Iraq’s strides toward economic diversification and the strategic advantages offered by its geographic location. He also expressed the organization’s willingness to extend technical support, provide scholarships through affiliated academic institutions, and invite Iraqi maritime professionals to take part in technical meetings at the IMO headquarters.
