Iraq’s political landscape enters a decisive phase as the Iraq premiership race heats up across rival factions. The ruling alliance prepares to launch formal talks on selecting a prime minister. At the same time, competing voices signal divisions within the bloc. As a result, uncertainty continues to shape the Iraq premiership race heats up the narrative.
On Monday, leaders within the Shiite Coordination Framework confirmed they will begin internal discussions. The alliance aims to finalize a nominee for the premiership. However, disagreements over key candidates remain unresolved. Notably, former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki still appears in deliberations despite controversy.
Ahmed al-Issawi, a senior political figure, stressed that Maliki’s nomination still stands. He explained that supporters have not withdrawn enough backing to disqualify him. Therefore, Maliki retains a pathway to re-enter the race. Nevertheless, opposition inside and outside Iraq complicates his chances.
Meanwhile, Iraq’s political system continues to follow its informal power-sharing structure. Traditionally, a Kurdish figure holds the presidency, while a Sunni Arab leads parliament. In contrast, a Shiite nominee from the largest bloc assumes the premiership.
In addition, several alternative candidates have gained traction. Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has emerged as a strong contender. Likewise, former premier Haider al-Abadi remains under consideration. Some leaders also suggest introducing a new consensus figure to break the deadlock.
However, divisions within the alliance continue to surface. Aqeel al-Rudaini indicated that leaders may move away from Maliki entirely. He argued that the bloc prefers a fresh candidate to avoid further controversy. Consequently, internal negotiations will likely determine the final direction.
External pressure has also influenced the process. Donald Trump previously criticized Maliki’s potential return to power. He warned that such a move could affect relations with Washington. In response, Maliki rejected those remarks and accused the United States of interference.
Despite tensions, alliance leaders emphasize that time remains to reach an agreement. Amer al-Fayez confirmed that discussions will focus on either reaffirming Maliki or selecting another figure. Importantly, any nominee must secure a two-thirds majority within the bloc.
Furthermore, additional names continue to circulate. These include Basim al-Badri, Ali al-Shukri, and Mohammed Sahib al-Darraji. Each candidate represents different political and technocratic backgrounds. As negotiations unfold, their prospects may shift quickly.
At the same time, supporters of Sudani express confidence in his position. Mohammed al-Khalidi stated that Sudani holds the strongest chance among current contenders. He also rejected the idea of a compromise candidate, signaling a push for a decisive outcome.
Recent political developments add urgency to the process. Iraq held parliamentary elections in November. Soon after, lawmakers selected parliamentary leadership. More recently, Nizar Amedi secured the presidency following a contested vote.
Under the constitution, the president must now act within 15 days. He will task the largest bloc with forming a government. Therefore, the Coordination Framework faces mounting pressure to finalize its nominee quickly.
As negotiations begin, the stakes continue to rise. Political rivalries, foreign influence, and internal divisions all shape the outcome.
