Iraq Welcomes Arab League Leadership Shift Amid Regional Uncertainty

Iraq welcomed the selection of Nabil Fahmy as the Arab League’s next Secretary-General. The Foreign Ministry said the move can support stronger Arab cooperation. Moreover, Baghdad expressed readiness to work with the new leadership. The message highlighted Iraq’s focus on regional stability and joint Arab action.

Arab foreign ministers chose Fahmy during a regular league session in Amman. They supported his appointment for a five-year leadership term. Additionally, the decision followed earlier diplomatic backing for his nomination. Iraq backs Arab League coordination as the region faces growing political pressure.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Baghdad wants deeper Arab cooperation under Fahmy’s leadership. It also called for stronger coordination between Arab states. Furthermore, the ministry linked this cooperation to security, stability, and economic development. Iraq views the Arab League as an important platform for shared regional goals.

The ministry said Iraq looks forward to practical work with Fahmy. It wants Arab states to build stronger coordination structures. Additionally, Baghdad wants member countries to improve collective decision-making. These steps could help Arab governments respond better to regional challenges.

Iraq also thanked Ahmed Aboul Gheit for his work as outgoing Secretary-General. The Foreign Ministry praised his efforts to serve Arab countries. Moreover, it said he worked to strengthen the Arab League’s regional role. Baghdad framed the leadership change as a chance to continue that work.

Fahmy brings long diplomatic experience to the post. He previously served as Egypt’s foreign minister. He also represented Egypt as ambassador to the United States and Japan. Therefore, many officials see him as an experienced figure in Arab diplomacy.

His appointment comes during a sensitive period for the Middle East. The region faces security tensions, political divisions, and economic challenges. As a result, Arab states may need stronger communication and more united positions. Iraq backs the Arab League efforts that can reduce division and support dialogue.

Baghdad also repeated its commitment to the Arab League and its institutions. The ministry said Iraq wants to contribute actively to Arab solidarity. Additionally, it stressed the importance of common goals between member states. This position reflects Iraq’s wider diplomatic approach in the region.

The Arab League often plays a role in regional discussions and political coordination. However, member states sometimes disagree on major issues. Therefore, the next Secretary-General may face difficult diplomatic tasks. Fahmy will need to balance different priorities among Arab governments.

For Iraq, the appointment offers a chance to strengthen its Arab diplomatic ties. Baghdad has worked to position itself as a country that supports dialogue. Moreover, Iraq often calls for calm during regional crises. This approach gives the country a role in wider Arab discussions.

The ministry’s statement also focused on economic development. Iraq wants Arab cooperation to support growth, stability, and shared interests. Additionally, stronger regional coordination could help countries manage trade and investment challenges. These goals may shape future talks between Baghdad and the League.

Overall, Iraq welcomed Fahmy’s selection as a positive step for Arab diplomacy. Baghdad wants the new leadership to support unity and practical cooperation. It also wants Arab states to work together during difficult regional conditions. Iraq backs the Arab League action that promotes stability, development, and solidarity.
