Iraqi women’s basketball growth highlighted in league final

The Iraqi women’s basketball scene reached a new milestone as Ghaz Al-Shamal defended its league title in Baghdad. The team defeated Banat Akad Ankawa 82–38 to secure the championship for the second consecutive year. The victory marked both dominance and consistency.

In the third-place game, Darbandikhan outclassed Al-Sinaat Al-Harbiya 73–30. This result underscored the skill gap between established northern teams and emerging southern clubs. While southern players showed determination, their inexperience limited competitiveness.

The finals capped a five-day tournament held in group format. Organizers praised the energy of participating teams and the enthusiasm of fans. Yet they also acknowledged the clear divide in development. Northern and Kurdistan Region teams showcased advanced tactics, while central and southern provinces struggled to match the pace.

Nevertheless, the event reflected progress. More women are joining basketball programs across Iraq, even in areas with limited resources. According to coaches, young players in Baghdad and Basra show strong interest. However, they require facilities, funding, and experienced trainers to reach higher levels.

Transitioning from celebration to analysis, officials emphasized the importance of balance in development. They argued that stronger leagues emerge when competition grows evenly nationwide. Thus, investment in youth programs and infrastructure will play a vital role.

For Ghaz Al-Shamal, the win built on last year’s triumph. Players celebrated with the trophy in front of cheering supporters. Their captain praised teamwork and dedication, while coaches credited preparation and discipline. This back-to-back title sets a new standard in Iraqi basketball.

Meanwhile, fans expressed hope for broader growth. They called for better coverage, sponsorships, and opportunities for female athletes. Many see basketball as a platform for empowerment and unity across provinces.

Ultimately, the Iraqi women’s basketball league showcased both achievement and challenge. Ghaz Al-Shamal’s dominance confirmed excellence in the north. However, the disparities revealed that the sport still needs nationwide support. With proper investment, Iraq could build a competitive women’s league recognized regionally.

The Iraqi women’s basketball journey continues, blending celebration with a call for stronger development.
