Iraq Defense Cooperation Strengthens with South Korea Amid Regional Tensions

Iraq defense cooperation takes center stage as Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back in Baghdad on Wednesday. During the meeting, Al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s strong interest in expanding defense ties with South Korea. He stressed that Iraq defense cooperation will focus especially on advanced armament and air defense systems.

Al-Sudani highlighted that Iraq has a clear plan to develop defense cooperation with South Korea. He pointed out the government’s priorities in adopting the latest defense technologies. Notably, Al-Sudani mentioned the importance of upgrading air defense capabilities, which remain critical amid growing regional tensions.

Moreover, the prime minister praised South Korea’s past support during Iraq’s fight against terrorism. He also called on Korean companies to increase their investment and operations in Iraq. The government sees this step as part of Iraq’s broader reconstruction and development efforts.

In response, Minister Ahn expressed South Korea’s commitment to deepen defense cooperation with Iraq. He conveyed greetings from the South Korean president to Al-Sudani. Ahn confirmed that South Korea will deliver the KM-SAM air defense system, also known as “Cheongung,” to Iraq early next year. This missile system can intercept aircraft and ballistic missiles, marking a major upgrade in Iraq’s defense.

The delivery of the KM-SAM system aligns with Iraq’s Vision 2050 and its Development Road project. The South Korean delegation stressed that Iraq defense cooperation reflects Iraq’s progress and stability, which have earned positive global attention.

Calls to boost Iraq’s defense systems intensified after the June conflict between Israel and Iran. Both sides reportedly violated Iraqi airspace during the 12-day war. Following this, Iraq lodged a complaint with the United Nations Security Council, accusing Israel of breaching Iraqi sovereignty.

Al-Sudani also congratulated the visiting delegation on South Korea’s National Day and the anniversary of its army’s founding. He emphasized the importance of resuming the Joint Committee meetings between Iraq and South Korea to strengthen bilateral ties.

The prime minister reaffirmed that Iraq defense cooperation will be comprehensive and benefit various sectors beyond military hardware. He stressed cooperation in reconstruction and economic development as key pillars.

The South Korean delegation included Minister of Defense Acquisition Programs Administration Seok Jong-gun and the South Korean ambassador to Iraq. Together, they discussed ways to deepen cooperation and support Iraq’s defense modernization.
