Iraq Armenia trade cooperation took another step forward on Monday as officials from both countries discussed ways to strengthen economic and transport ties. The talks focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, increasing investment opportunities, and advancing major infrastructure projects that could improve regional connectivity. Both sides also highlighted the importance of closer collaboration in transportation and trade.
Armenia’s Ambassador to Iraq, Ruben Soghoyan, met Iraqi Transport Minister Wahb Al-Hassani to review opportunities for stronger cooperation. During the meeting, Soghoyan said annual trade between Iraq and Armenia currently stands at around $400 million. He also expressed confidence that both countries could increase that figure through broader economic partnerships.
According to Iraq’s Transport Ministry, the Armenian ambassador emphasized his country’s interest in expanding transportation cooperation. He explained that Armenian companies have extensive experience in road construction, logistics, and railway development. Therefore, he encouraged greater collaboration in these sectors to support Iraq’s infrastructure goals.
Furthermore, Soghoyan highlighted the role that Armenian companies could play in future transport projects. He said their technical expertise could contribute to improving Iraq’s transportation network while supporting long-term economic development. In addition, he stressed that stronger cooperation would benefit both countries through increased trade and investment.
The ambassador also reflected on his recent visit to Basra province. He described the visit as an important opportunity to observe Iraq’s major infrastructure projects firsthand. Moreover, he praised the strategic importance of the Grand Faw Port and the Development Road project.
Soghoyan said both projects could transform Iraq into a major regional trade hub. He added that improved transport links would strengthen commercial connections across the Middle East and beyond. As a result, he believes these projects will create new opportunities for regional cooperation and economic growth.
Meanwhile, Minister Al-Hassani welcomed Armenia’s interest in expanding bilateral relations. He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to building stronger partnerships with friendly countries. He also said the ministry encourages leading international companies to participate in developing Iraq’s transport sector.
Additionally, Al-Hassani revealed that Iraq and Armenia have already prepared a draft bilateral transport agreement. He described the document as a strategic framework for future cooperation. Furthermore, he expressed hope that both governments would finalize and implement the agreement soon.
The minister explained that stronger transport cooperation could improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and encourage investment. He also noted that infrastructure development remains one of Iraq’s national priorities. Consequently, the government continues to seek partnerships that support sustainable economic growth.
