Iraq Affirms Regional Leadership at Sharm el-Sheikh Summit

Iraq affirms regional leadership as Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani arrived in Egypt on Monday for a high-level summit. He is attending the Sharm el-Sheikh conference, focused on the crisis in Gaza.

From the outset, Sudani’s visit signaled Iraq’s deep involvement in regional diplomacy. Upon arrival, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron. This important meeting occurred on the sidelines of the summit.

During the talks, the two leaders discussed strategic bilateral relations. They also explored expanding cooperation across energy, infrastructure, and defense. Water management emerged as another key area for collaboration.

President Macron confirmed French companies would join the upcoming Baghdad Conference. These firms specialize in energy, defense, and infrastructure. Their participation aims to support both nations’ mutual interests.

In addition, they addressed the planned Conference on the Reconstruction of Gaza. France is expected to chair this event. Both leaders stressed the need to maintain the ceasefire in Gaza.

They also emphasized promoting regional stability and reinforcing peace efforts. Humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza remains a top priority for both Iraq and France.

In a firm diplomatic move, Sudani conveyed a clear warning. He informed both Egyptian and American officials that Iraq would leave the summit if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended.

A senior Iraqi source clarified that Egypt had not officially invited Netanyahu. The source revealed that former U.S. President Donald Trump attempted to arrange Netanyahu’s attendance.

However, the same source emphasized Iraq’s firm stance. Sudani communicated that Iraq would withdraw immediately if Netanyahu appeared. This stance reflects Iraq’s consistent position on the Gaza crisis.

Interestingly, other countries at the summit shared Iraq’s concerns. This regional consensus blocked Trump’s attempt to involve Netanyahu. The Iraqi message sent a powerful signal to all involved.

Iraq affirms regional leadership not just in words, but through its bold diplomatic choices. Sudani’s warning to key powers shows Baghdad’s growing influence.

Iraq now demonstrates that it makes decisions independently. It also signals that its voice matters in shaping Middle East policies. This moment highlights Iraq’s evolving role in regional affairs.

Furthermore, Iraq affirms regional leadership through proactive engagement with global partners. By meeting with Macron and influencing summit dynamics, Baghdad steps confidently into a leadership role.

As the Gaza crisis unfolds, Iraq continues to prioritize peace, diplomacy, and humanitarian support. This approach reinforces its image as a responsible and assertive regional player.
