Iraq Bans Plastic Bags in Bakeries Under New Environmental Measures

The Iraqi government approved major environmental restrictions on Tuesday. These rules aim to fight worsening pollution. Specifically, the cabinet introduced wide-ranging measures. These steps limit plastic consumption across commercial sectors. This landmark policy forms part of a broader federal push. Ultimately, the state wants to safeguard public health.

During a regular session, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi chaired the meeting. This was the newly formed government’s second cabinet meeting. Ministers officially adopted proposals from the national committee. This committee focuses on reducing plastic pollution. According to an official statement, the state will phase out single-use items.

Therefore, an Iraq plastic bag ban will completely reshape local commerce. These changes will occur over the next six months. The official executive directive explicitly prohibits the free distribution of plastic shopping bags. Furthermore, the regulation outlaws plastic packaging in bakeries. It also completely halts plastic bag importation. Instead, businesses must adopt environmentally friendly alternatives. These biodegradable options will protect consumers.

Additionally, the state will penalize manufacturers. This step aims to discourage plastic production. For instance, the government is imposing a mandatory business fee. This fee applies to factories producing nylon bags. Officials will also collect environmental service fees. These include special monitoring and assessment charges from plastic producers. Consequently, the state will allocate these revenues to local environmental projects. These funds will directly support monitoring programs and public awareness campaigns.

To ensure long-term compliance, the cabinet approved a specialized technical committee. This new group will establish clear mechanisms. These mechanisms will encourage waste-sorting and recycling projects. Moreover, the committee will incentivize investments in the paper industry. This financial support will ease the transition toward paper bags. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment will launch major educational campaigns. These programs will teach citizens about plastic hazards.

Admittedly, regional implementation faces serious economic hurdles. For context, authorities in Sulaimani introduced a similar bakery ban back in 2019. However, local departments failed to enforce the rule fully. This failure occurred due to high costs. Imported plastic options remain incredibly cheap. They easily beat the price of paper alternatives.

Despite these economic challenges, environmental experts argue strongly. They believe that tougher federal policies are essential. Without strict laws, the country cannot prevent long-term environmental harm. Ultimately, the new Iraq plastic bag ban represents a critical step toward national ecological recovery.
