President Nechirvan Barzani Holds Second-Day Baghdad Meetings with Christian Lawmakers and UK Ambassador Irfan Siddiq, Qais al-Khazali

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani continued high-level meetings in Baghdad on Tuesday, advancing efforts toward a government formation breakthrough. From the outset, a government formation breakthrough shaped every discussion and set the tone for urgent negotiations.

After arriving on Monday, Barzani quickly engaged with leading Iraqi figures. He met politicians from Shiite alliances and Sunni blocs. These meetings aimed to accelerate negotiations and reduce political friction. Moreover, they reflected growing urgency across Iraq’s political landscape.

On the second day, Barzani widened his outreach. First, he met Christian lawmakers inside the federal parliament. During the meeting, he emphasized their historical presence in Iraq. He also highlighted their cultural and civilizational contributions. Furthermore, he underlined the need for stronger political representation.

In addition, Barzani stressed that Christian participation must remain central in the next cabinet. He argued that inclusive governance strengthens national unity. As a result, lawmakers welcomed his position and praised his consistent support for minority rights. They also acknowledged his role in promoting coexistence.

Meanwhile, Barzani held talks with Irfan Siddiq, the United Kingdom’s ambassador. Their discussion focused on Iraq’s political direction. They reviewed the steps needed to finalize a new government. At the same time, they examined regional developments and internal Kurdistan dynamics.

Siddiq reaffirmed strong ties between the United Kingdom and Iraq. He also emphasized continued support for both Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region. Consequently, the meeting reinforced international backing for stability efforts.

Later, Barzani met Qais al-Khazali, leader of Asaib Ahl al-Haq. Their discussion addressed political coordination and ongoing negotiations. In parallel, Barzani prepared for talks with Faiq Zidan, head of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council.

Political observers described the visit as highly significant. Mohammed Daham al-Fahdawi called it decisive. He pointed to Barzani’s influence and experience. He argued that Barzani plays a key role in easing tensions. Furthermore, he suggested that Barzani will remain engaged until progress materializes.

Overall, the visit continues to build momentum. Each meeting contributes to a broader push for consensus. As negotiations evolve, a government formation breakthrough remains the central objective. Ultimately, all sides appear increasingly focused on reaching a lasting agreement.
