Iraq Condemns Strike on Italian Base in Iraqi Kurdistan Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Iraq condemns the strike on an Italian military base in the Kurdistan Region following the overnight March 12 attack. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein criticized the assault, emphasizing the risk of widening the conflict across the region.

During a phone call, Hussein discussed the incident with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. Tajani reaffirmed Rome’s support for Iraq and expressed readiness to assist amid threats to security and stability.

The conversation also covered broader regional developments, including the potential economic fallout. Hussein warned that disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a severe energy crisis. Consequently, any halt to Iraqi oil exports would create significant economic challenges.

Furthermore, both ministers highlighted the importance of Iraqi–Italian relations. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas serving shared security and economic interests. Tajani emphasized Italy’s commitment to helping Iraq navigate current threats.

Meanwhile, Hussein stressed that Iraq does not want to become a battlefield for other powers. He cautioned that involvement in the ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran war could destabilize not only Iraq but the wider Middle East.

In addition, the foreign minister noted that protecting Iraq’s sovereignty remains a top priority. The country must avoid being drawn into conflicts that endanger civilians and critical infrastructure.

Analysts observed that attacks on military installations, such as the Italian base, could undermine regional stability. These incidents may also affect global markets, particularly European energy supplies.

Drone incidents reported across 14 Iraqi provinces this week have heightened security concerns. Hussein and Tajani agreed that international collaboration is necessary to prevent further escalation.

The Iraqi government called on all parties to respect Iraq’s neutrality. By condemning foreign attacks, Baghdad aims to safeguard its territory and maintain stability in the Kurdistan Region.

In conclusion, Iraq condemns strike incidents strongly, signaling that the government will protect its sovereignty while cooperating with international partners. The March 12 attack underscores the fragility of regional security and the need for continued vigilance.

As tensions persist, Iraq condemns strike actions repeatedly, reaffirming that violations of its territory will not be tolerated. Baghdad also reiterated its call for cooperation to maintain peace and prevent economic or energy disruptions.
