Iraq’s Pivotal Role in Promoting Regional Security Recognized by NATO Leadership

Iraq’s pivotal role in promoting regional security took center stage during Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein’s recent visit to Italy. On Thursday, Hussein met with NATO officials at the alliance’s Joint Command Headquarters in Naples. The Iraqi delegation received a formal welcome from Admiral Stuart B. Muench, the Commander-in-Chief of the Joint Command.

Italian Ambassador to Baghdad Nicola Fontana also attended the meeting, along with several top NATO leaders. The discussions highlighted NATO’s ongoing commitment to strengthening ties with Iraq. Admiral Muench congratulated Hussein on Iraq’s National Day and emphasized the importance of deepening the partnership.

During the meeting, both parties explored ways to enhance military cooperation. NATO reaffirmed its support for Iraqi security and defense institutions. In particular, the alliance expressed its desire to expand joint training and expertise exchange programs with Iraq’s Ministry of Defense.

Fuad Hussein acknowledged the positive developments in Iraq-NATO relations. He expressed gratitude for NATO’s assistance and welcomed continued collaboration. He also confirmed the Iraqi government’s readiness to provide full support for future joint efforts. Hussein emphasized that such cooperation serves the shared interests of Iraq and the broader international community.

Admiral Muench, in turn, voiced appreciation for Iraq’s constructive engagement. He highlighted Iraq’s pivotal role in promoting regional security, noting its influence on peace and stability in the Middle East. He also expressed optimism about Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections. According to him, the elections represent a vital step toward solidifying democracy and internal peace.

The meeting concluded with a review of recent regional and global developments. Both sides agreed on the need for continued coordination in facing mutual challenges. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining international peace and security.

The talks in Naples further strengthened the partnership between Iraq and NATO. They also reaffirmed Iraq’s pivotal role in promoting regional security as a cornerstone of their cooperation.
