Iraq Launches Poverty Reduction Plan

Poverty Reduction Plan Iraq is entering a new phase as the government reveals its next five-year national strategy.

The Iraqi Ministry of Planning has announced a comprehensive approach aimed at reducing poverty levels across the country. Spokesperson Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi shared that poverty has already declined in recent years.

According to him, the poverty rate dropped from 24% in 2022 to 17.5% in 2024. This improvement stems from focused economic and social policies led by the government.

More specifically, measures such as boosting the social welfare network and improving the ration card system played crucial roles. Additionally, the government prioritized service delivery to the country’s most disadvantaged areas.

Notably, support for the education sector had significant impact. Monthly financial grants were distributed to families with school-aged children. As a result, enrollment rates among children from low-income homes rose rapidly.

Now, the government is preparing a fresh roadmap to deepen this progress. The Poverty Reduction Plan Iraq, set for 2026 to 2030, aims to bring poverty below 10%.

This strategy will include several new components. It will focus on health, education, housing, and income opportunities. Moreover, it will tackle food insecurity, climate threats, and gender-based challenges.

Women’s empowerment and support for vulnerable groups will also receive attention. Authorities believe these steps will improve long-term resilience across struggling communities.

Al-Hindawi emphasized that this isn’t just a financial plan. Instead, it is a social transformation project designed to strengthen the foundation of Iraqi society.

To ensure long-lasting results, the Ministry plans to work closely with regional partners and NGOs. Together, they aim to provide equal access to key services for those who need it most.

Clearly, the Poverty Reduction Plan Iraq is not a temporary fix. Rather, it reflects the government’s deep commitment to inclusive development. Through determination and well-planned policy, Iraq is moving steadily toward a future with less poverty and more opportunity.
