Transport Minister Highlights Iraq’s Vision to Become a Regional Rail Hub

Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibas Al-Saadawi confirmed Iraq’s railway projects will boost Iraq’s economy in the region. He emphasized the importance of modernizing the railway sector through several strategic initiatives. These projects aim to transform Iraq into a regional transportation hub.

The minister led an Iraqi delegation to the Spanish National Railway Company in Madrid. During the visit, both sides explored joint cooperation in railway development. Spanish experts shared detailed insights into their projects and operational models.

Al-Saadawi met with Spain’s Renfe company leaders, accompanied by Iraqi transport officials. The discussions focused on learning from Spain’s advanced railway experience. Spain’s success in high-speed rail was a key topic throughout the meetings.

He stressed Iraq’s intention to meet international standards in all upcoming railway ventures. This effort aims to elevate Iraq’s position among regional transport leaders. The railway projects will boost Iraq’s economy by increasing connectivity and trade.

The minister noted the government’s commitment to strategic partnerships, especially with Spanish firms. He highlighted Imathia, a Spanish company already working on key Iraqi infrastructure. Al-Saadawi also emphasized new investment opportunities in Iraq’s rail network.

Currently, Iraq is restoring old tracks and building new lines. One example is the 112 km line from Al-Faw to Al-Shuaiba. Another is the 45 km route between Rabia and Fishkhabour. These lines form part of Iraq’s larger Development Road initiative.

A major future project includes a 1,200 km dual railway starting at Grand Al-Faw Port. This route will connect Iraq to Turkey and Europe. The railway projects will boost Iraq’s economy through increased exports and logistics capacity.

The Basra-Shalamja line, managed by Imathia, will transport travelers and pilgrims. It serves as a model for future foreign collaborations. The delegation also toured Spain’s AVE high-speed train maintenance facilities. They examined equipment similar to Iraq’s Najaf-Karbala monorail system.

Spain’s Renfe company runs most of the country’s regional and high-speed rail services. Iraq seeks to replicate that success through international cooperation. Overall, the railway projects will boost Iraq’s economy by building infrastructure and attracting investment.
