Iraq Plans Large-Scale Desert Land Reclamation to Boost Agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced an ambitious plan to reclaim 3.5 million dunams of desert land for agricultural use. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to increase the country’s agricultural production and ensure food security.

According to the ministry spokesperson, Mohammed Al-Khazai, the plan aims to expand the area of arable land in Iraq. This effort will focus on reclaiming desert areas, transforming them into productive agricultural zones. In addition to this, the ministry also revealed plans to distribute plots of land equipped with agricultural services to agricultural engineers, graduates of agricultural institutes, and veterinarians.

The ministry has set a target to reclaim 3.5 million dunams of desert land throughout the year. This ambitious project will significantly contribute to expanding the cultivated areas and increasing the production of strategic crops. Last year, the ministry successfully reclaimed 4 million dunams of desert land, a move that greatly boosted the country’s crop yields.

In coordination with the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture has formed specialized technical teams. These teams work on developing agricultural plans based on the country’s water conditions. The Ministry of Water Resources plays a crucial role in determining areas where wells can be drilled. This ensures that groundwater is used efficiently and prevents waste.

Furthermore, the ministry has created plans to provide 50 dunams of agricultural land to eligible professionals, including agricultural engineers, agricultural institute graduates, and veterinarians. The government will offer necessary services and support to ensure the success of these agricultural projects. These efforts aim to foster a sustainable and thriving agricultural industry.

Through these initiatives, the Iraqi government strives to expand the country’s agricultural capabilities and reduce its reliance on imports. The reclamation of desert land is a vital step in Iraq’s efforts to achieve agricultural self-sufficiency. The land reclamation plan is an essential part of the nation’s strategy to address food security and support rural development. By transforming desert areas into productive farmland, Iraq aims to improve its agricultural sector for future generations.
