Buzurgan Oil Complex Announces Gas Compression Unit to Maximize Associated Gas Utilization

The Buzurgan Oil Complex has revealed plans to establish a new gas compression unit with the ability to process up to 70 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf). This initiative aims to fully utilize the associated gas from Missan’s oil fields, aligning with broader energy and operational goals.

Hassan Falahi, head of the gas processing division at the complex, shared details with the Iraqi News Agency (INA), explaining that the gas processing division plays a vital role within the facility. He noted that a processing facility built in 2018 had an initial capacity of 200 MMscf. Of this, 30 MMscf is used to power the Buzurgan and Power Plant stations, while 10 MMscf is allocated to oil processing and other operations.

Future Plans for Associated Gas

Falahi emphasized that Missan Oil Company, in partnership with the Ministry of Oil and relevant authorities, has future plans to harness more associated gas from the region’s oil fields. One key component of these plans is the compression unit, which will have the capacity to process 50 to 70 MMscf of gas. The compressed gas will be transported to the Halfaya field, supplying power stations in the Al-Kahla district. This project is currently under implementation.

Another critical development involves the expansion of the Power Plant station, which serves as the internal power generation unit for the complex. If approved, this expansion will require 47 MMscf of gas to supply the station, with an additional 35 MMscf needed for the planned upgrades to the generation units. These efforts will ensure that all associated gas from Missan’s oil fields is utilized efficiently.

Processing and Infrastructure Development

The gas received at the complex undergoes processing to convert it into sweet gas suitable for power generation. The gas is then transported through pipelines, compressed, and pressurized to meet the needs of power stations across the Buzurgan complex. Additionally, the gas processing division and all power stations rely on an independent power generation unit built in 2016, which consumes approximately 17 MMscf of gas.

Workforce and Maintenance Plans

Falahi also highlighted the commitment to workforce development, noting that Iraqi employees in the gas processing division receive ongoing in-house training, with some sent to Egypt for specialized programs in collaboration with Chinese partners. The division operates with advanced safety systems, minimizing the risk of major incidents.

Regarding maintenance, the complex follows an annual maintenance plan that covers long-term overhauls in collaboration with the maintenance department. Quick repairs are also handled promptly, typically within one to two days.

Finally, Falahi shared that the 60-kilometer gas pipeline connecting the Buzurgan complex to the Halfaya field is now 80% complete. This pipeline is part of the broader gas compression project to transport gas to Halfaya, supporting the continued growth and efficiency of the complex.

In conclusion, the Buzurgan Oil Complex remains focused on maximizing the utilization of associated gas, ensuring efficient power generation and reducing unnecessary gas flaring.
