Iraq at COP29 in Baku

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) officially opened its doors on Tuesday in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking a significant moment in global climate action.  Iraq is among the nations participating in this crucial summit, sending a high-level delegation led by President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid.

This year’s COP, held in the Azerbaijani capital, is a landmark event. It represents the largest gathering ever hosted by Azerbaijan and is the first time this major climate conference has been held in the region. The opening ceremony featured the signing of a host-country agreement and other key documents between the government of Azerbaijan and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat, solidifying the framework for the conference’s proceedings.

President Rashid’s presence at COP29 underscores Iraq’s commitment to addressing climate change and its willingness to engage in international efforts to mitigate its impacts.  His attendance follows a formal invitation extended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.  The Iraqi delegation accompanying President Rashid includes prominent government figures, such as Health Minister Saleh Al-Hasnawi and Faleh Al-Khazali, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Water, and Marshlands.  Several other advisors and officials are also part of the delegation, demonstrating the importance Iraq places on these global discussions.

COP29 is expected to address critical issues related to climate change, including emissions reductions, adaptation strategies, climate finance, and international cooperation.  The participation of Iraq, a nation facing its own unique climate challenges, highlights the global nature of the climate crisis and the necessity for collaborative solutions.  The conference provides a platform for nations to share experiences, discuss best practices, and work towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and other international climate accords. The outcomes of COP29 will play a crucial role in shaping the future of climate action and determining the trajectory of global efforts to combat climate change.
