Ongoing Flooding in Baghdad Areas Raises Criticism, with New Rain Alerts Issued

Baghdad Faces Ongoing Struggles with Flooding and Poor Infrastructure

Baghdad has been dealing with a growing sense of frustration as heavy rains caused widespread flooding across the city. The streets, alleys, and even homes and businesses were overwhelmed by the sudden rainfall, sparking public outcry over the government’s failure to address the issue.

The flooding of major streets in Baghdad, led to sharp criticism of the government on social media. In some areas, the floodwaters remained unaddressed, and the city’s maintenance teams had not yet arrived to pump out the water. This was particularly troubling to residents who felt the lack of immediate action.

High-end areas like Zayouna and parts of Mansour were also affected by the floods, with social media users mocking the situation. The newly constructed Qurtuba Bridge, which took over 200 days to complete, was also submerged, highlighting the extent of the issue. In addition, Sheikh Zayed Hospital faced serious disruptions as patients were moved through flooded halls.

The spokesperson for Baghdad’s Municipality confirmed that efforts were being made to drain the floodwater from the streets, but many residents were skeptical of these promises, having experienced similar issues in the past.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Meteorological and Seismological Organization issued a warning about upcoming rainfall, which could exceed 50 mm in certain areas, including Kurdistan, and lead to flooding. The cities of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, along with parts of Diyala and Kirkuk, were expected to experience severe weather.

This recurring flooding problem is not new. Successive Iraqi governments have struggled to deal with it, with critics accusing them of poor management and corruption. The failure to improve public services and infrastructure has left Baghdad vulnerable to flooding whenever heavy rainfalls occur.

Baghdad’s population has grown rapidly in recent years, reaching almost 9 million people, making up over 20% of Iraq’s population. However, the city has not seen any significant upgrades to its infrastructure or public services, leaving many streets flooded and homes damaged during heavy rains.

The capital continues to face numerous challenges, including poor roads, inadequate maintenance, and deteriorating sidewalks. Waste accumulation and exposed electrical wires pose serious risks to the public, with residents living in unsafe conditions.
