Iraqi President Advocates for Democracy and Regional Stability at Erbil Forum

Baghdad, Iraq- Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid emphasized the importance of preserving Iraq’s democratic system through adherence to the constitution, justice, and equality. He also reaffirmed the country’s dedication to regional stability and diplomatic engagement.

Speaking at the Third Erbil Forum, Rashid stressed that Iraq’s development relies on a steadfast commitment to democratic values and social justice. “There is no alternative to this path if we want our people to experience freedom, prosperity, and stability,” he stated.

He underscored the need for stronger cooperation between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), highlighting that national progress depends on unity. “Iraq is enriched by its diverse ethnic and social fabric, as well as its abundant natural resources,” he remarked. “Strengthening collaboration between Baghdad and Erbil benefits everyone.”

Despite stable global oil prices, Iraq continues to grapple with financial difficulties. Rashid pointed to delays in funding allocations by the Ministry of Finance, which he said have hindered economic growth and stalled infrastructure projects. “This issue is not only slowing down economic and urban development but is also impacting the financing of essential budget items, except for salaries,” he explained.

Reaffirming Iraq’s foreign policy, Rashid emphasized Baghdad’s commitment to maintaining balanced international relations and respecting the sovereignty of other nations. “Iraq upholds the right of nations to determine their own paths,” he stated. “While we are prepared to defend our territorial integrity, our primary approach remains rooted in diplomacy, dialogue, and bilateral agreements.”

Addressing broader regional concerns, Rashid warned that Iraq is not immune to the rising instability across the Middle East. “For more than a year, the region has faced ongoing political, security, and military challenges that are reshaping geopolitical dynamics and posing serious risks,” he observed.

He also condemned the ongoing conflict in Palestine, calling for urgent humanitarian assistance and a lasting political solution. “For nearly a year and a half, the Palestinian people have faced relentless aggression, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis,” he said, urging an immediate ceasefire, expanded humanitarian aid, international recognition of Palestinian self-determination, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Regarding Syria, Rashid expressed Iraq’s willingness to engage with its evolving leadership while maintaining a stance of non-interference. “We hope that developments in Syria will address the aspirations of all ethnic, religious, and sectarian communities,” he stated, reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to diplomatic relations founded on mutual respect and sovereignty.

Earlier, President Rashid arrived in Erbil, where he was welcomed at Erbil International Airport by Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.
