Iraq Launches Five Initiatives to Empower Women on National Day

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani announced five major initiatives aimed at empowering women during the National Day of Iraqi Women celebration on March 3. These programs focus on leadership, security, and economic inclusion, aligning with the government’s broader commitment to strengthening women’s roles in society.

The Prime Minister unveiled the Third National Plan for Women, Peace, and Security (2025-2030) to boost women’s participation in decision-making, enhance protection from violence, and support conflict-affected individuals. He also introduced the National Data Platform, which will provide updated statistics on challenges faced by women in Iraq.

To promote peacebuilding efforts, the government launched the National Network of Women Peace Mediators, bringing together female volunteers from all provinces. Additionally, the new Women, Peace, and Security Institutewill serve as a specialized center for training and research in conflict resolution.

For leadership development, Al-Sudani introduced the “Pioneers of Change” Program, a training initiative designed to help women enhance their leadership skills in public and mixed-sector institutions.

Al-Sudani highlighted significant progress in women’s leadership. He noted that 111 women hold Director General positions, while 47 serve as Assistant Director Generals. Women also play an active role in Iraq’s security forces, with 786 female officers in the Ministry of Defense and 691 in the Ministry of Interior.

The government has also strengthened economic support for women. Over 573,000 women are now included in the social welfare system, and financial aid for female heads of households has increased to 325,000 IQD. The Social Security and Retirement Law for Workers (Law No. 18 of 2023) ensures job security and maternity benefits for women in the private sector.

Additionally, Iraq has activated the Survivors Law (Law No. 8 of 2021) to support Yazidi, Turkmen, Christian, and Shabak survivors of ISIS atrocities. The National Strategy for Iraqi Women (2023-2030) and the Updated National Strategy to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls (2023-2030) have also been launched to reinforce women’s rights and protections.

During the event, Al-Sudani visited an exhibition showcasing handmade crafts, artistic works, and traditional products created by Iraqi women. The exhibition, themed “The Women of Earth, the Essence of Life,” celebrated women’s contributions to Iraq’s cultural and economic development.

Iraq continues to expand women’s opportunities through legal reforms, leadership programs, and social protection measures. These initiatives signal the government’s commitment to gender equality and long-term social progress.
